'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

The arm needs to be tapered. You need a reemer or you can get inserts from ruff stuff an drill a straight hole.

It looks like there is a $10 option to get the arm angled with a tapered trehole

So with the necessary pitman arm, will one from a 2wd truck work too? i notice you mention the van too, but just want to be sure. Sounds like a pretty easy task.

The truck pitman arms dont work unfortunatly. If you search there are a few threads on junkyard pitman arms. I woul but am on my phone and it takes forever for me to find anything.

Getting the pitman arms off can be quite a bitch sometimes but they are hard to break so dont be scared to beat on it

Ok, cool. No need to search it for me. I sure appreciate all the info you've posted though!

I'm running the super lift one no problems. Right now WFO is having a 10% off everything sale. So that will nock about 9 buck off :thumb:

Do some research before you piece together your cross-over parts. Make sure your pitman arm and cross-over arm have the same spacing between the holes.

Can you tell me more about the hole spacing? Not sure I understand what you mean about the crossover arm having spacing between the holes. I thought a regular crossover arm only had one hole for a TRE on it. Crossover arm = the part that bolts to the knuckle, right?

The distance from the TRE hole to the center of the King Pin (crossover arm) needs to match the TRE to Sector Shaft spacing (pitman arm). The 4wheelsupply arms are built at 7.5". The best pitman arm I could find was from Summit $68.26 for a Superlift P/N SLF-1104. It measures 6.5" between the holes. You should check out the vendor section over at pirate for specifics on his arms before you order. I had my highsteer arms milled with the angle on the end, and they are not functional. I'm currently waiting for a replacement set.

you dont want the jeep arm. i have that now it is only about 5.5 i think center to center. the superlift 1104 is the one to get that wfo sells.

I have the Superlift 1104 pitman arm as well. Has worked great for me. I am running Sky's D60 arm on the knuckle.

I dont have an opinion on those "cheap" arms posted above. Having that angle milled in is a MUST though! They look a little thin compared to most arms out there, but they are springess so thats a plus. Make sure you get the cap for the driver side too.

I thought that too when i first looked at em. But they are 3/4 in thick so they arnt going anywere.

Hey All. Thanks so much for the help with the crossover info!! Sure appreciate it.

Today was an interesting day. I took Claire's family up to the Wind Caves and Pyramid Lake, NV. This is part of the trail that I did recently called "Steve's Loop." That was my previous wheeling trip.

Anyway, I borrowed a spare from "alexsdad" since I blew that tire in the parking lot a couple weeks back, just in case. It did have a small leak in it, which I think is from debris getting stuck between the tire and the wheel at the bead. So this morning I filled it with some fix-a-flat and then foolishly didn't remove the tire from the back of the truck to roll it around and make sure the fix-a-flat stuff got all around the bead of the tire. :doah:

So we were off. We cruised up to the wind caves, which are incredible. It's like a little Moab/Arches National Park back there! Here's a few pics. No real wheelin pics. Might get a video upload of a hill climb I had to do that was fairly challenging for my stock truck. Anyway...

Then we cruised up to Pyramid Lake and looked around a bit.

Here's the name-sake rock, 4 miles across the lake. It's actually an island in the lake. The lake is big! 28 miles long! :yikes:

Back on the highway to home in the middle of nowhere, the passenger rear tire blows out. This is the same location of my previous blow out. :doah:

So I put on the spare that "alexsdad" had loaned me. Unfortunately, because I didn't get the goop all spread around inside the tire like I should have, it was flat once I got it on. Before installing it, though, I did roll it around a ton to make sure the fix-a-flat sealed the bead. Fortunately, I had a little cig-lighter air compressor, so I let that run for about 10 minutes till it got too hot and seized. But, it got me up to about 8 or 9 PSI, so we went down the road. There's a facility for wild horses along there and I noticed they had some heavy equipment and a shop, so we stopped in and finished airing up. Made it home without further incident. We'll see if it's got air tomorrow. Should be fine, I hope. :D

Holy crap man, thats pretty nasty. Glad you had a spare though..,

Great pics as always though!

I should probably add that when the tire blew, it didn't look so bad, but I had to drive another 1/4 mile or so to a place where I could change it safely, and that REALLY tore it up.

Also, to be clear, this is the spare tire that came with the truck.

Ok. So I'm starting to sort through all the info you guys have posted about crossover steering. A friend of mine, "alexsdad," is willing to sell me a drag link for a real good price. This one has spherical rod ends on it. Will steering arm manufacturers drill out a straight hole for a spherical rod end instead? Seems it would be cheaper/easier for them to do. But then that would leave me the problem of finding a pitman arm which wasn't tapered. Any suggestions? If it's too much trouble to run the SREs, then perhaps it would be better to swap them out for TREs. What do you guys think?

  • 2wd Sector Shaft: $10 + my time.
  • Drag Link w/ SREs: $50
  • Pitman Arm, Superlift 1104: $69 (assuming I can get it to work with SREs)
  • Steering arm stud kit, SKY Mfg: $20
  • Steering Arm: Sky Mfg: $139
  • TREs, assuming SREs won't work: $70.

$288 or $358 depending on if the SREs will work for me. Am I missing anything, aside from shipping costs?

That would get me down to a minimum of $565 to get my truck up and running, or $635 if I need TREs, or about $685 if I need to also get spring/u-bolt plates.

To change things up again, if I did use the SREs, I could have a straight hole drilled in the $50 steering arm from Pirate, and just have them do the milling/drilling, so I'd be into it a total of $60ish. That would take me down to a minimum cost of just about $220.

Could I run an SRE on just the steering arm end, and a TRE on the pitman arm end if it's too hard to find a pitman arm that will work with an SRE?

Don't know of it matters or not but I have heard that rod ends are not DOT legal. Some say they aren't safe for road use but in the real world, as long as you use good ends It's at least as safe.

Cool pics Colby!:thumb:

On that tire sealant crap get it out of there asap if you want to keep that rim at all.
I used it once on my rally wheels and that stuff rusted the wheel really badly almost to the point of being not usable.:eek1:

Meh, the wheel isn't something I want to keep, so I'm just going to run it till I do the one ton swap in (spring?) and then it'll go under the old green blazer with the half ton axles and be someone else's problem. :D
