'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Looking good Colby :waytogo: I can't wait to see it with the big meats on the front , too !
I understand exactly what you mean about the spring bushing bolts :doah: I have never had a set actually come out, I always end up with a angle grinder and a 7" cutoff wheel and just removing them that way.

Great work on the rig :waytogo:

It's weird, the rears came out SO easy on both trucks. The fronts were an absolute bitch on both. Ugh.

I'm damn anxious to get the front sitting on the tires too. :D First thing in the morning I'll be back out there braving the cold. It snowed last night, so I started my day shoveling down to dry earth first. :doah: It was 20* out, so I donned some long underwear, a balaclava, and my over-clothes and I was warm enough.

Here in the rustbelt, front rear , whatever, the bolts are always completely "rust welded" to the sleeves making any attempts of beating them out through the holes futile :doah:

I saw the snow/ ice in the pic, and was sort of shocked for a moment, when I think NV , I think of Vegas , since that's the only area I've visited out that way. It was about the same here this weekend, a bit warmer, around 30*, but still chilly.

Do you have the springs and axle in position on the front yet, or is that part of tomorrows adventure?

It get's extremely cold here in Northern Nevada. At my place, our elevation is 4500 feet. Supposed to be 15* tomorrow morning when I get started on the truck at 8 A.M.... :yikes:

No, I don't have the springs and axle located in the front yet. I was hoping to knock that out this afternoon, but got hung up on 2 things:

1. Since I'm using a Dodge front axle, I have to relocate my springs 1/4" inward on each side. As such, I had DIY4x make me some 2" steel washers/spacers out of 1/4" stock. However, I ended up guessing on the hole size in the washer, and had it drilled to small. So, I had to go down to the shop and throw them in the drill press and open them up.

2. The '90 uses a larger bushing on the rear of the front spring. To do the swap, I decided to just pull the shackle from the '73 and use it on the '90, so I had to pull that off. This was actually easy, except that the exhaust was right in the way of pulling the passenger side bolt, and that caused a lot of time loss and frustration too.

So, first thing tomorrow the 60's getting installed with the lift. THen I'll probably break for lunch and a picture update. :D

Well, good luck on it tomorrow, I'll be checking for pics when I get home from work :D

The spacer /washers seem to work well for the dodge 60 install, we did it on a buddies rig years ago, and it worked good. We just used a 2" or so hole saw and cut out some washers from a 1/4 " plate , then redrilled the center holes to 9/16 or what ever the bolts are (don't remember right off).

Good luck and stay warm :waytogo:

I think it was on your recommendation that I'm doing it this way. I figured for $4, I would be better off having Kert cut the 2" ring than buying a hole saw that size and fighting with it on the drill press. :D

Also, since I had to pull those spring shackles, I ended up taking them down to the shop and sand blasting them. So, I'm painting them up tonight. :)

Well the nice thing of having the rear sit 12" higher, is that it's now possible to see over the hood. :waytogo:

Thanks. I'm stoked, and motivated. :D I really like the black tire/black wheel look on this truck. The pic doesn't make it look very nice, but I'll get some real pics tomorrow and it should look nicer. :)

NICE... getting excited for you, good luck tomarrow.:thumb:

To bad it`s so cold out for ya.:D

Hit -30c at my place tonight. :eek1:

Damn! That's chilly. Do you guys up north see your hootuses at all in the winter?? :D

6*F and sunny right now. Guess it's time to start working on the truck.

Looking forward to a pic update man

Hopefully my Jimmy will look pretty similar, if I can score the 60 I am trying to get

I saw an ad somewhere, probably Craigslist, a guy in Nampa has a 60/14 bolt for $900. 4.10 gears, open. Have you seen that?

Ok, got the lunchtime update for ya. :wink1:

That's a damn tall truck! The cage must have really weighed down my '73, because this step is much higher than that truck. Front bumper is at 30", rockers are at 28", rear bumper is at 28". These measurements are approximate, as that area is NOT flat/level.

But, with locating the axles forward/backward, the tire clearance looks pretty good. Obviously I'm going to have to do some cutting, but I like the stance! :D
