'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

just so everyone knows, one of the reasons this happens especially under load going uphill is because of axle wrap. Remember the pinion points down in the front when driving forward. Going up a hill while under load is the worst because the front end is already unloaded some.

Don't believe your front axle has axle wrap issues, have someone else drive it and watch that front pinion, even high dollar custom spring will have a small amount, but just about any mass produced spring will allow a decent amount of pinion movement

that's the reason Colby could hear and feel it going up the rock but park it and the driveshaft turns free, because the pinion is not trying to point down.

Not trying to discount what everyone else has said worn mounts and or t case bearings in the front output can make it way worse just wanted to point something out

That makes great sense!! Thanks for the tech!

Little update from today:

  • Got the rear end under the green truck. :woot: That's good news. Should have it rollable by Sunday evening.
  • Clearanced my crossmember
  • Took the truck out on a test drive of the route we're taking tomorrow to confirm that I have no driveline issues.

It was a good day. Driveline problem is fixed, for which I am SO relieved. Thanks to everyone who walked me through this stuff. I was going to space the transmission up, but I ran out of time to build a spacer, and clearancing the crossmember was easy to do, and will work just fine.

I'm really pleased to start getting my mess taken care of behind the church. It was beginning to attract folks from off the highway to go up there during preschool hours during the week to find out if the truck was being parted out, and I really can't have that happening. It's just not safe for the children or the women running the preschool.

I drove the Blazer up some very steep hills today, much steeper than was previously necessary to cause the problem, and had no issue. So glad that's over with.

Looking forward to going back out there tomorrow with a group of folks. You'll see pics here, but this place is just an incredible location - absolutely stunning. Should be a good time indeed!

Glad to hear you figured out the driveline issue :waytogo:

Im still fighting my front shaft on my dodge 60 but I feel my issue is a whole different problem from yours. :dunno:

By far one of the cleanest looking 90's K5's Ive seen
Keep up the good work:thumb:

We went out to the Wind Caves today with a group of friends. Had a great time. Here's a few pics of our trip. The route we took was VERY mild, because the other drivers were in stock SUVs. Still, a very nice day. :)

This pic is actually from last night, as I drove out there to get my bearings on the route before bringing a line of trucks with us.

Here's owenst7 coming down a chute in the rocks last night.

Friend's Trooper headed down the mountain last night. That's Pyramid Lake in the background.

Today, it was much hazier, which was unfortunate for the views, but still a nice day. Here's the big hill climb.

Here I'm standing on one of the hundreds of red rock fins.

Incredible Nevada landscape, Pyramid Lake.

You can see it was awfully hazy today. I think there must have been a wild fire in California or something...

And a comparison with stock on 33s. :)

Great pics and cool comparison shot. What exactly is a fin?

outcropping of rocks shaped like a shark fin or any kind of fish, looks like a fin coming out of the ground.

Thanks. Comparison shot is fun, wish it were a clearer day in the one from yesterday. I should've taken it the night before, as it was clearer and the light quality was the same. :D Also, I recently had a break-in, and so I have a solid window in that side temporarily. I have a new slider window I need to install, and would like to have it in the comparison photo. :D Next time.

Yep.

Also, y'all might like to notice the pic of me going up that steep hill. You can see how unloaded that front end gets, and why the axle wrap would help cause the problem I was having. In this situation, would a suck-down winch help with traction?

This morning I measured my fuel economy from yesterday. I got 16.5 MPG! :waytogo: I was real surprised. This is the first time I've measured it, and it was over a short distance (70 miles), so I'll have to do it quite a few more times. But still, feel damn good about that! I thought I'd be in the 13-15 range.

Great pics as always Colby :waytogo:

I'm so jealous of some of the terrain you guys have right out your back door

I really am blessed with the places I've lived and their proximity to amazing country. :D

Small update. Got my lumber rack installed today. Pretty pleased with how it turned out. Have to use it tomorrow to bring back my wife's 600 lb painting from Sacramento.

In smaller news, I also got my tool box bolted down in the bed of the truck. Think I'm going to use some JB Weld on the nuts to lock them to the bottom of the truck. That'll make it easy to remove the box, and challenging for a thief to do the same.

I wasn't sure about the whole rack idea when you first brought it up, but , I must say you really pulled it off  :pimp: it looks awesome and I hope it does all that you need it to :waytogo:

This is exactly what I was thinking... :D
