'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

I would say do the 5.3 not hard at all to do. you will have to do a drive by cable to use you 700R4

Just for the sake of argument, some folks have ran the tv cable into the cab and ran it off of the throttle pedal on the drive by wire setups. So not impossible, but much less desirable for that reason. Other than that, drive by wire has been proven to be perfectly reliable and zero lag.

How so? They are the same engine externally, just like a 305 or 350 are the same engine externally.

"Limited" is the operative word there... but I thought I read something about the exhaust being harder to fit.

So, hypothetical question: how absurd is it to consider updating to a 4L(whatever)E HD transmission with overdrive? I mean, if I am dreaming, and since this is my "do it right the first time" build.... What kind of cost am I looking at adding?

Oh snap. This build just got.... EPIC :thumb:

:haha: well, we'll see about if the funds come together when the time is necessary. I suppose something will have to happen at that time, and thus the need for planning. I have to come up with a budget, which means I have to come up with a complete parts list and estimate for exhaust. While I could do the swap now, it isn't a wise financial move at the moment. Friggin adulthood and responsibility. :doah:

I would guess that it would likely add around $1000 to the swap to do the 4L60E which is the most comparable to your 700r4. A 4L80E is the stronger trans and would be a little more expensive. But again, all of this is completely subjective. used trans, rebuilt trans, what the trans was originally equipped in, ETC. But the bright side is your t-case would bolt right up to the 4L60E!

but it wouldn't to the 80E? Looks like a nice new one from BTO is 2200 for the 80. A 60 is about $600 less. But then there's the whole wiring issue, which I gather is expensive.

IIRC, you would need a NP241 that was originally behind a TH400. Again, IIRC, th350, 700r4, 4l60e is all 27 spline out put and th400, 4l80e are 32 spline. The wiring cost difference between the three options (depending on what route you go) would be negligible.

I have that in my 12 and LOVE it! The deep first and the double OD is amazing! But its also a whole nother can of worms in a swap.

A 4L60E is closer to the same length as a 700R4. Not sure how much longer a 4L80E is, it is all about not having to move your transfer case, so you don't have to build new driveshafts

I did a 5.3/4l65E/205 swap in mine and didn't have to move the transfer case crossmember.

Exhaust is the same for a 5.3 or a 6.0. the truck manifolds will hit the frame. You nwill need headers or F body manifolds to clear the frame rails.

Pretty sure that the 80 was an inch and a half longer. The 32 spline input will slip right into the 241 you already have. And I used the optishift trans controller (think it's Usshift.com now). Hook it right to the tps on your tbi and your good to go. The trans controller also has a speedo output that corrects for tire size and gear ratio. Remove your drac and hook it straight into the speedo head little tuning and you get corrected speedo. Only thing that you want to watch was if you are looking to buy a used 4l80 is that it has a sensor in the rear hole and not a plug. I bought a 2005 trans core to build because of some gear train issues in the earlier models so I had to install the tone ring for the output speed sensor.

while everyone loves an LS swap, myself included. its hard to beat a drop in crate. dhcomp did his crate swap in his driveway over a weekend by his lonesome I believe.

I went crate due to shorter down time, and cost. Mainly the downtime.

The crate runs good....and its still gutless. Kinda bummed. Glad i did it, but wish i had been in a position to do a 6.0L.

That being said, going through BD turnkey looked badass....but I was in the $5k range for what i wanted . A bit steeper than the 2k crate motor.

If you can afford the downtime, do a 5.3. Just look into smog requirements. In CA, you can't swap in a smaller motor than stock. SO a 5.3 in place of a 5.7 won't fly.

That's a stupid requirement. I thoght it only had to be the same year as or newer than the vehicle it was going in to. Seems like the CARB hippies/greed mongers would love for you put a smaller displacement engine in there because it would theoretically put out less pollutants. :dunno:

Maybe they're afraid of someone putting a small engine in something big and heavy and then lugging it around all day working it hard?
