90 Suburban Build Xtreme Offroad TV - Body Work

Holy Scrub Radius BATMAN!!!

-G

Did you cut/paste from their faq?
http://motorsports.axletech.com/faq.asp
Q: Holy Scrub Radius, Batman! How much scrub is there on these things?

A: All portal wheel ends suffer from the same problem – the presence of a gear case between the steering axis and the wheel mounting surface. The remedy is the use of wheels with deep backspacing. Our portal wheel end was designed around a HMMWV double beadlock wheel with 7 inches of backspacing. If you are running a 3.5 inch backspace wheel on a Dana 60 then using a 7 inch backspace wheel on our portal wheel end will get your scrub radius and track very close to where it was originally.

@Truckman4life I don't have cable either but all the episodes are available for online streaming at powernationtv.com, there is usually a 1 week lag time from when the episode airs on TV till the episode is available online. There are like 5 or so episodes with the Burb already available online.

I love the build and how over the top it's becoming. I do think a couple things are counterproductive if he really wanted an ultra-reliable EOTW vehicle. The first thing you'd want is a KISS setup. That back suspension is everything but. I agree w/ others that he should have left it a stock length w/ a single rear axle. Just having portals under it with a nice linked suspension to control the wrap portals create (like having 5" blocks) would have been cool enough.

Ian has stated a few times on the show that parts should be readily available. If he's going to put in the TC that's been discussed to create the drive line, he just shot himself in the foot, because he's not going to find spare parts in an EOTW situation.

Finally, this thing is going to have a turning radius about the size of TX. He better armor the hell out of it because there's no way you're gonna drive it anywhere w/out bashing into stuff.

Agreed. I think it was kinda dumb to call this "End of the World"/"Zombie Apocalypse" build too, cause most if not all would agree that in the end of the world situation, you won't be looking for car parts (nor would he be able to find all these car parts in the EOTW situation), it will be food/shelter/firearms & bullets that you will be after. Everything else is a little stupid. But once again, this is a show that is supposed to cater to everyone, even the d-bag teenagers that know jack shiz about anything....those morons eat stuff like that up all day long. So you know they do it to try and raise ratings...just the name of the game.

If all Ian did was say, "Hey, we have built a lot of stuff on this show, so we are going to try something different that might not be practical, but will show you something new and different," well it might appeal to guys like us, but it doesn't have the dramatics of "End of the World!!!!" that get morons to view stuff even if normally they wouldn't.

You guys think about this stuff too much...lol

I could careless if it's practical for any zombie/end of the world crap.

Haha, when you have an obsession, it's hard not to think about it too much :rotfl:

But as I stated before, I think it's pretty cool and can't wait to see the end product (and the tcase setup we've been talking about)

zombie obsession? :D

I'm looking forward to seeing it all done too. Hopefully he gets some decent film offroad with it.

Square body obsession....

Clarification, square body Chevy trucks...not square body women...that would just be weird

@runamok151 the rear suspension isn't really that complicated. It's a leaf spring and some links. The links are all the same length so a spare is easy to carry and the leaves are stock length front 6" springs. True, the slider boxes and pivot point are a little different from the norm, but I think what some people are missing is that the parts and design he is using are meant to eliminate the need for readily available replacement parts. If everything was stock, you would require support . . .

I love the idea of this truck. I hope they go with a different wheel though, unless ugliest wheel on the planet is part of the EOTW theme.

Yeah, wheel choice could have been better.

I see this as more of a disaster response vehicle than an end of the world vehicle. I think it would go over better with the doomsday prepping crowd with that slightly different spin.

I saw the episode and I got the uniformity part. But it's a hell of a lot more complicated than a set of leaf springs and anti-wrap bars. If he wanted to keep parts universal he should have figured out how to mount the same 2" lift spring packs all the way around and then he would have only needed one spring pack for a spare for all four corners.

Yeah, he actually did just that on his LockJaw M715 build. In the case of the Burb I think it was just a matter of convenience to reuse the original front 6" springs in the rear since they were already on hand. Running portals, he knew he was dropping lift height from the get go and wouldn't need the 6" springs up front

So what happened with the suburban?
looks like its on the back burner of the tv show extreme 4x4

and I got the old panhard setup off the front . this was a original built by one of our members years ago who no longer is on the site . super beefy unit .

So what happened with the suburban?

It's parted and scrapped. The studio chose not to renew Ian's contract and instead opted for two new unknown hosts to replace him. My guess is they got these other people to work for cheap because they wanted to be on tv. They are rebranding and changing shop aesthetic in addition to dumping all old projects. It's a freaking crime if you ask me. Ian was with that show from day one and was responsible for ALL of it's content even when he had help and a co host. He did all the writing and planning from start to finish. Dude's work ethic is unreal too. He'd be at the studio 6 and 7 days a week all the time 12 hrs + to make deadlines. Show seems like it's being gutted and wussified just like they did to Trucks a couple years ago.

I keep DVR'ing thinking sometime, they will get back on the project. Had no idea they were dropping Ian. He really has made that show what it is and he is a very talented person!

Bummer...
