90 Suburban Build Xtreme Offroad TV - Body Work

@sweetk30 Yeah, some of that is shoot from the hip type stuff but he also gets some used stuff like axles for really cheap too just from being who he is. For instance, he has a standing relationship with a local junk yard where they will call him and give him first dibs on 1 ton axles under wrecked trucks that come in.

...14bff front axle..?

Along time ago, when Jessie was still on the show, they did a 14b front axle upgrade on a project. It was rather kind of silly since they ended up using D60 axles in it. They had custom inner seals made for it too.

More recently, Ian did a full blown built 14 bolt steering front axle for his rock bouncer build Raging Bull. That rig was super nice, I got to see it in person and it was some of his better work. Had around $80k of parts in it.

I haven't seen that one.

So I assume the ends of the leaves are meant to slide in those slots as it compresses - replacing shackles. What keeps the leaves and those slots from shearing the bolts - all that rubbing is going to wear through. Is there any kind of bushing in there?

@JoshHefnerX he is putting a plate underneath the spring eye to carry the load, the bolt is just for retention, but he may wind up doing some delrin washers/blocks in tracks too. It's a TV build, they aren't always concerned about longevity, just the nature of the beast

Its based of this style of suspension that semis have been using for a long time. The last one I did was a 1982 Kenworth C500 and it just captures the tip of the spring inside a bracket and it slides metal on metal and the links are what locate the axles. The one I did was an oil field winch truck and I removed the spring and installed a solid 5" wide piece of T1 steel that was cut to the shape of the original leaf spring pack. Super mondo heavy duty. I can't wait to see how his turns out. Keep the updates and pics coming for those of us that don't have cable anymore.

yes he has a couple updates, not too many as it looks like he's been bouncing around between different builds lately.

Holy Scrub Radius BATMAN!!!

Between the miles-long wheelbase and those ridiculously wide portal boxes, I sure hope for Ian's sake the apocalypse happens in a wide open field with no trees or obstacles around.

Ain't no way that thing is ever going to be able to turn around on a trail, or even make a U-turn. :yikes:

Wouldn't it just be a lot easier to take a deuce and a half and throw on the suburban body and swap it to a 5.9 Cummins and call it good? I guess when it's not your money then whatever works.
