warning: long post
I got my first taste in a long time of what it's like driving the blazer to the wheeling destination (1.5 hours) a couple weeks ago. It was pretty miserable... but it made it just fine.
I parked it to register and wait on Mike (oakknight) to get there. After about 45 minutes or so, we headed out to the trails. I noticed on the way that the transmission didn't really want to shift out of first. When it finally did, it was a hard shift. I didn't really think anything of it and went on.
I came up to the first obstacle and was trying it. Mike was spotting me. As I backed up to get a bump on the ledge, Mike noticed a LOT of tranny fluid on the ground. At the same time, I head some very strange noises coming from under the rig.
I got out to look and found this:
That's a piece of my transmission housing that broke off...
We winched it out and pulled it into the parking lot. I didn't look that close at the damage out of frustration, but the transfer case was just hanging there, being held up the by the drive shafts. After further inspection of the piece that was on the ground, it looks like it's been cracked for a bit and finally just gave. Since the bolt was still in the piece, that means the adapter broke, too.
I'm guessing the biggest culprit is the bent frame. The front, drivers side is bent up, which would put stress on the whole drivetrain.
After considering all my options (sell, part out, fix, ect.), I've decided to hang on to it in favor of getting a different rig. I just don't have the extra cash laying around to get a different rig to swap all my parts on to. This thing will probably take a year or so off from wheeling while I collect parts and finish the doubler.
One of these days I'll get more pics of the damage to the transmission.
Plans for year off:
-finish doubler
-build crossmember(s)
-get new rear drive shaft
-get the frame pulled
-cut out rockers in favor of rectangle tubing
-engine cage at the least
-get diy4x motor mounts
-monster in a box trans.
Thanks for looking.
