'91 Blazer - Trailer Queen to DD - back to Trailer Queen - *broken trans housing*

what lights are those???

Except for the small light coming through the windows in the background, all the light is from the rock lights.

I found them here:

Went wheeling last weekend.

Fought the shift linkage the whole time.

I drove it Monday and went to back into my parking spot and the shift linkage let go.

Yes, both ends are broken...

I called Lokar about it since it had only been hooked up for a week or two. Turns out part of it was my fault, as I had the pivot point tightened too much.

Since both ends are broken, Lokar is replacing it on warranty. I have my B&M Mega shifter back in to keep it moble.

I'll upload my pics for last weekend one of these days...

THats insane that both ends would break simultaneously!

That's what I thought!

Finally got pictures uploaded from my last wheeling trip. Nothing terribly exciting but I thought I'd share.

The rear brake line has been giving me fits for a while (probably from being pulled tight over and over) so I decided to upgrade:

Got them bled today. Going to drive it this week to get ready for another wheeling trip next Saturday.

Thanks for looking!

I'm getting some strange steering while going down the road ever since I put on hydro assist.

The truck starts to wander to the left, so I correct it, then it keeps going right, so I correct it, then it keeps going left, so I correct it... and so on.

It's like it I can't keep the wheel exactly centered to keep the tires straight. I didn't really notice this without hydro assist...

Anyone experienced anything like this?

Mine never did that. I haven't heard of anyone else's doing it either. That sounds like full hydro fun. I would guess you still have some air in there. Are the fittings pointing up on your ram? Any loose connections? Does it have enough fluid with the ram out all the way?

The fittings are pointing up on the ram, with no loose connections (that I know of). There should be enough fluid in the system, as I bled it quite a bit when I installed it.

I'll give everything a once-over to make sure.

I just went back and looked at your pics. You might want to check the hose going from the resi to the pump. The pic makes it look like there is a pretty good 90* in there to turn down to the pump. Maybe get a 45 and put on top of pump or slide a piece of copper tubing into hose at the bend. That way you can form the corner by hand but it won't collapse as the motor flexes. Or move you resi somewhere on the motor with better routing.

Are you thinking the current way the lines are ran could be limiting flow?

Just that corner turning down and going into the pump. Being gravity fed if there is any restriction it could be causing some cavitation and putting air into the system. Feel the bottom side of the hose right in that bend and if it flattens out at all I would try the cheap, easy and effective way of sliding whatever sized copper tube into the hose and then hand form the bend back in. Especially with the resi being body mounted and the pump being engine mounted. You have two different flexes going on. Engine torque, and body roll. They could be working against each other when you are getting in the gas. Just a thought anyways
I did a ton of reading when I went full hyro, the biggest problem/fix I read was resi mounting and the supply line going to the pump.

warning: long post

I got my first taste in a long time of what it's like driving the blazer to the wheeling destination (1.5 hours) a couple weeks ago. It was pretty miserable... but it made it just fine.

I parked it to register and wait on Mike (oakknight) to get there. After about 45 minutes or so, we headed out to the trails. I noticed on the way that the transmission didn't really want to shift out of first. When it finally did, it was a hard shift. I didn't really think anything of it and went on.

I came up to the first obstacle and was trying it. Mike was spotting me. As I backed up to get a bump on the ledge, Mike noticed a LOT of tranny fluid on the ground. At the same time, I head some very strange noises coming from under the rig.

I got out to look and found this:

That's a piece of my transmission housing that broke off...

We winched it out and pulled it into the parking lot. I didn't look that close at the damage out of frustration, but the transfer case was just hanging there, being held up the by the drive shafts. After further inspection of the piece that was on the ground, it looks like it's been cracked for a bit and finally just gave. Since the bolt was still in the piece, that means the adapter broke, too.

I'm guessing the biggest culprit is the bent frame. The front, drivers side is bent up, which would put stress on the whole drivetrain.

After considering all my options (sell, part out, fix, ect.), I've decided to hang on to it in favor of getting a different rig. I just don't have the extra cash laying around to get a different rig to swap all my parts on to. This thing will probably take a year or so off from wheeling while I collect parts and finish the doubler.

One of these days I'll get more pics of the damage to the transmission.

Plans for year off:

-finish doubler
-build crossmember(s)
-get new rear drive shaft
-get the frame pulled
-cut out rockers in favor of rectangle tubing
-engine cage at the least
-get diy4x motor mounts
-monster in a box trans.

Thanks for looking.

I wouldnt be concerned with the frame, they came bent from the factory. I had to cut my body lift up to get my body to sit level. Mines been bent, judging from the PO, for a long time. Most likely your motor/tranny mounts are mushy. Or the bolts in the adapter came loose and viola.

I dont even run the support rods on mine, just standard motor mounts and tranny mounts. I just replace them about every 2 or so years. And make sure the bolts on the adapter and to the crossmember are tight cuz they constantly are coming loose it seems.

I don't run the support rods either. The mount is in good shape; I check the mounting bolts it uses somewhat regularly as I've caught them backing out, as you mentioned. Just this summer I replaced the bolts that mount the adapter to the trans.

I don't know what other option to consider as the culprit...

Although, now that I think about it, the drive shaft was pretty close to bottoming out since I lowered it. I flexed it out, though and it still had some room...

The driveshaft could have possibly grease locked and bottomed out cuz to much grease, thats a good possibility as well.

No real update. I finally uploaded a pic I took a while back of the trans/tcase adapter. You can see where the trans output shaft rubbed on the adapter while we limped it off the trail. You can also see where one of the bolt hole broke.

I've got the interior stripped. I haven't had the time/motivation to get the trans pulled, yet.

I've managed to get a new daily driver, which could also handle towing the blazer.

With all this downtime, I've been thinking about all the stuff I want to do. I've been putting a lot of thought into narrowing the front clip and cutting the top off, since I don't have to worry about daily driving this anymore.

We have a baby on the way and he will be here pretty much anytime, so progress will be extremely slow.

Haven't updated in a while. Been enjoying being a dad.

I finally got the chance to get the trans pulled (8 months later).

Here's a pic of the carnage:

Going to pick up a rebuild trans later this week. Hopefully I can get it put in before another 8 months goes by.

I also sold my bumpers trying to generate some funds to keep this build crawling along. Also going to narrow the front and going to stretch the wheelbase in the back so new ones will be mandatory.

I got it back up and running!!! But, it's no longer owned by me. Sold it to Nick (revvin7).

I'm pleased that it's going to another ck5er. Enjoy it, Nick!
