91 Burban build thread

Oh yeah, I need to do some serious fender trimming. I thought I'd seen a good tread on that but now i can't find it.

So what your saying is the the front end is crocked with the pasenger side back and the drivers side forward?

If I guessed right then when you put the axle in you bolted it down that way just loosen it and make it straight it is probably just not on the center pins straight.

Looking good Josh. Where did you pick up the MTRs? I think a set of 37" radials would be about perfect for street use.

I got them from berg supply in NC. I only paid about $700 for five shipped to my door. One thing I've realized is they are out of round a little. As long as I keep it around 55-60 its ok but if I try to go any faster is starts shaking pretty bad. They should prove to be a long lasting tire on the street and be pretty rugged on the trail. I've got to get this crooked axle thing figured out. Its bugging the **** out of me. I wonder if my bushings are bad. I don't see how they are since I replace them with the springs just 10 months ago and I haven't wheeled that much since then.

How's it going at Taji?

What did you figure out ?

well, I've loosened the bolts and found that there is not enough play in the center holes to make up for the amount of crookedness. So that leaves three possibilities

The bushings are shot, which, while possible, I think is unlikely because they are 10 months old.

The pins were miss aligned on the springs. This is possible because they are custom springs my Alcan so mistakes can be made

Or, the factory perches are not perfectly true on the axle.

I guess all I can do is drop the axle and start measuring and taking things apart.

The springs were not removed whe nyou replaced the axle, correct?

Taji is Taji. Been pretty quiet lately. Waiting on your old boys to come and let us go. Not until late spring though. I am just glad to have progression out of the way and getting hours. I have almost 100 since July 30. Our 3rd bat is doing less, and the guns guys are logging aobut 80-100 a month. Bastards.

How is VIP life?

Ryan, The springs were not removed when I swapped the axles.

I tried several different measurements but what I think is the most accurate is measuring from the center of the spring hanger bolt in the front to a common part of the axle. I've been using the tie rod. So when I drop the axle, I'm going to measure from the bolt to the center pin on the spring. If that is off then I'll measure from something on the spring itself. This will tell me if the problem is in the bushing or the spring. If all things are even there then it has to be the pin holes on the axle. any thoughts?

FWIW, you could put some BBs in your tires to help balance them out. I had some of the 36" military bias plies and it did wonders. You may want to search some threads to determine how much to put in each tire. I think it was around 10-11 oz. Nice HD hauler.

Do you have to swap ends on one of the springs? Maybe they both have a little offset and one is reversed.

I guess I'll go look when it warms up but I'm pretty sure there is a military wrap on one end and that's how I new which was front and which was back. That is a good idea though.

So, I'm still working on my rear bumper but I took it our on some trails today just to see how she does. It was just me and my kids and a couple of guys from work so I didn't have anyone taking pictures. There was a pretty good hill climb and a few tight spots but nothing major. I did stop on this one spot just to see how much it was flexed out. I definitely need to do some fender trimming. Here are the pics

It was a little place near Quantico. It wasn't very big. you could see every trail in the place in 15 minutes. There was nothing really hard there but it did serve the purpose of putting the rig through its paces. I really wanted to make sure there was nothing loose on the truck.

I did have one problem. When I got done I noticed that a couple of the leafs on the passenger side were rotating out of the spring pack. I hit them back in with a sledge but is that normal. The guy at Alcan spring said I should loosen my U-bolts to where they are just snug. This way the springs can move. I wonder if I have them too loose.
