91 K5 -Procrastination Build - bikini top!

1987cut, such a good looking truck!

I have not done much with the cage except stare at it. I do have a rear half kit now but I still need to buy a couple sticks of tubing for some extra straight braces. I intended to start piecing and tacking it together over this 3 day weekend but never got to it. I hope to start on it next weekend.

1987cut, have you noticed much body sag / movement in yours? I don't mean wheeling or flexing, just every day stuff like driving to work etc. Have you done any extra bracing on your body? I'm torn with doing the cage or cutting the roof first, I read about the body sagging and alignment issues after cutting the roof so installing the cage first might be best but also more difficult with the roof on.

Did you ever get the new cage installed? I've been wanting to do a cage/roll bar setup on my full vert conversion. I'm still trying to get everything back together after the fresh paint. It's more of a mall cruiser now, but I want a roll bar with a bikini top to go on it when I go out in her.

Clean! :thumb:

I've noticed the gap at the top of the door by the latch moves some. I put all new ORD bushings and 1" body lift on it a while back. After paint everything reassembled fine. I'd went on about a 450 mile road trip before paint, so I have some miles on it since the conversion. I absolutely love it, but I'm thinking about safety plus a cool top for it. But I don't want a full blown rock crawler cage

Thanks. It's good to hear the body movement isn't horrible. I'm giving some thought to tacking the cage together with ties to the body and then cutting the roof off to be able to better do the finish welding. Either way it won't be a quick project.

I'm in the same boat on deciding to cut before installing a cage. I have all my parts here for the conversion, but no cage. Any tips or tricks you can share 1987cut? My truck is almost the same color scheme as yours.

LOLs. Do the cut first, then the cage. SOOOO much easier to do cage work if the roof isn't there

Not yet rivman, I'm not having issues at the moment but I also don't do any hardcore wheeling with is down here south La. I want a roll bar for the safety of my family, but at the same time I'm going to stiffen the body. I've got a little race shop that's close that carries roll cages for dirt track and drag cars. I believe I'm going to try and match up a main hoop and then get some tubing to build me a roll bar/family cage setup

John, I would honestly just brace it up good and lop the top off, then burn in the cage and finish body work after, it would be so much easier and faster... so :hack::weld::grind: in that order.

I wonder what would be the best way to brace up the door opening? I really don't want to weld in a brace. I guess I could take the doors off and bolt in a piece of tubing???

The first gen guys have a few good ones. I'll try to find it, I had it saved on my computer somewhere

I would think plate drilled and bolted into the door hinges with tube welded to that running to a plate bolted into the striker would keep it rigid enough, and wouldn't require welding to the tub.

You know, if you guys keep solving my problems I'm going to be forced to work on this pig. :doah:

Something along the lines of the red one here with the full bikini top of the green is what i'm shooting for. I dont want bars coming down in front of me. I'd probably make brackets underneath to meet the main hoop and then tie it in. The tub does not flex that much.

Im going to shoot to go to Scrapin the coast in Biloxi, ms in June. You ever come over that way nvrenuf? And for sure Crusin the coast in October!

You know, to be so close I never go to those events. Not that I don't want to, I just usually forget and miss them. Maybe we could plan a lunch somewhere and try to gather up some other ck5'ers.

My thoughts exactly! I know of another full vert conversion from that area. He just painted his this past weekend. I'm sure its others in the south La/Ms/Al area!

Looks like that's Father's Day weekend. I may not be able to do Sunday but Saturday should be good.

Does the scrappin event cover the whole coast too or just the Biloxi area?

Biloxi to Gulfport. Hwy 190. Its a 10+ mile stretch. Plus something is always going on at the coliseum. Car show/swap meet, etc. You'll see lowered trucks, 4wds, race cars, rat rods etc. Its a large time
