That is a nice truck! Barn doors and rear a/c is great!

It’s the nicest square I’ve owned. Kinda feel bad for neglecting it for so long. The barn doors is a big plus! Reaching into the back with a tailgate doesn’t work for me, I’m too short lol. I plan to get the A/C functioning again before blazer bash. I can live without it, but the wife and kids won’t be too happy in a hot truck!

You just have to roll the windows down and drive faster!

I have redone a lot of my ac system o my burb. Stillhave a leak and tracked it down to thrme rear area

I anticipate that I will have to replace a lot to get it working again. Luckily all the parts are there. I’ll have to get smart on AC systems.

I had an old burb with rear a/c once.
Never use the front fan. The rear with double squirrel cages will freeze you out!

I saved the rear unit when I sold the truck. Of course the lines going to the rear got damaged when I moved. Gonna put it in something someday...

P.s. a/c systems are very basic.

Closed loop with a high pressure side ,(hot) and a low pressure side (cold).

The orifice tube is where the happiness happens (goes from hot to cold).

Repeat.

That's the basic concept.

That will keep me motivated to get it working! A good A/C will make it a lot more enjoyable to drive in the hotter months. I want it to be more of a daily driver, so A/C is a priority.

I noticed one of the rear brakes leaking fluid pretty bad after the test drive. I suspected the wheel cylinder was shot. I didn’t factor brakes into the budget but I definitely have to do brakes! Judging from this one, everything needs replaced. Might be able to turn the drums and rotors, the truck has 113k on the odometer so likely never had brakes done.

Got plenty of ac knowledge here at ck5, nothing you can’t handle.
If compressor iscto be replaced I recommend converting to a Sanden style, rather than spend money on a weak R4. Some will say parallel flow condenser is a must, for R134a conversion, it is not.

Brake leak at cylinders is kinda to be expected after sitting so long. If in fact they have never been done the material will asbestos, wet it down and bag the dust.

I didn’t even think about asbestos! Luckily everything was already wet from the cylinder leaking. Thanks for the heads up though before I do the other side!

I’ll have to look into the Sanden compressor, Rock auto looks like they carry mostly R4 compressors. I assume that my compressor needs swapped out. When I bought the truck the guy said that the AC worked but needed charged. He said used to sell used cars, so I 100% trust everything he told me was true. :haha:

Dirty dingo has a pretty good bracket set and conversion compressor head for the sanden to r4 conversion. You’ll just need to extend the little line off the condenser. One day when FedEx isn’t a bunch of morons it will arrive on my doorstep.

Dirty dingo has some cool stuff! Interested to hear how your setup works once fex ex delivers.

As for the axle, I'd go ahead and put in new wheel bearings and seals as well as brake cylinders.

The originals are 34 years old now.

Might as well while I’ve got it this far. It’s becoming a chore to locate all the correct brake parts. Oreillys carries some but not all parts for the 13” drums. LMC and rock auto have everything else I need, so I’ll add seals and bearings to the order.
It’s weird not working on a 14BFF!
