91 Suburban V2500 - Tow/Weekend Rig - Build Thread

If you are looking for a smooth, off road ride, and can deal with loads of body sway on the road, the 5100's woudl probably be good. And really, they go for about $440 a set....not bad.

You 100% get what you pay for in shocks....

i agree you certainly do. the Fox shocks on my quad made a world of difference. considering ive got stiff procrap springs and 3/4ton rears with overloads in them, i might be ok with regular 5100s.. hell i daily drove the suburban on 36" bias TSLs and no sway bar for a couple years. and my sub will never be a daily driver.

Ok, got the RS9000's mounted.

During installation, I was very concerned they were going to be too soft. Installed and tested them at a 5 setting, and made it about 2 blocks. They were as soft or softer than the Bilstein 5100's on this setting. Pulled over, cranked it up to 9, and prayed it would be firm enough.

At a 9 setting, the front is a little stiff, and the rear is a little soft, but overall, they feel decent. Rancho has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee, so see how they feel over the next few days, but really, don't see any other options out there.

The 2.5" body shocks seem pretty big, and the mounting hardware, sleeves, spacers all worked well.

Stoked to be driving it again!

Any photos?

Of my shock install ? :haha:

You guys want photos of EVERYTHING. Haha.

Didn't snap any as i was in a hurry to get them on, and the old style shock boots w/ zip ties don't' ever end up looking that good.

I'll try and snap some pictures today. :waytogo:

Where are you finding the catalog with the valving? I can't seem to find it.

Justin at 4WP was suggesting going to the 5125's with the higher valving....but Bilstein doesnt' seem to think that will fix my issue.

Can you link me to a page or PDF?

Sorry for the delay in getting this to you:
try this link and click on the "downloads" button

You will have to give the catalog some interpretation. Find the specs of the shocks that you had as far as compressed and extended lengths. Then match those specs to the 5125 or other series shocks and look at the valving.

Took the burb up to the snow, and it did alright.

This is the first longer trip i've taken in this truck since gears and TBI mods.

First thing i noticed was the decreased fuel economy. Didn't calculate it, but it was significantly worse than normal, under 10mpg on flat ground.

It didnt' run very well at high RPM's, and would stumble and miss going up the grade. Had to back off and pull the grade at a low RPM.

Going to check codes, turn the fuel pressure back down, and change some sensors out.

Motor isn't doing well, and even if running problems are fixed, there is noticeable crap coming out of the exhaust. You could see where i started it on the snow :(

Motor swap is becoming more and more likely. May go 6.0l from BD turnkey engines over at pirate, but will probably cruise Craigslist for a while first.

Xtreme 4x4 just did a run on the different GM engines..... 5.3L, 6.0L, Gen 3, Gen 4. Pretty interesting to find out the differences.

Do you have a fuel pressure guage? What do you have it set at?

Remind me what your set-up is. If it is close enough to mine (383, LT1 Cam, bored throttle body w/ stock injectors, fuel pressure at 13ish), I can send you a chip that you can try. I have tons of hours loging and programing chips and you are welcome to try one. You should be running the 16147060 PCM.

Fuel pressure is at 14-15, pretty high.

My motor is stock, all CFM tech tbi mods, headers, exhaust.

Lots of miles.

I would drop your pressure down to 12 - 12 1/2 and try it.

Ran it like that for a bit, and up'd it looking to really feel an increase in power.

12-12.5 is where it will get reduced to tonight.

Will keep ya'll updated.

Ok, Fuel pressure done to about 12. Working on getting a good EGR solenoid, just replaced the map sensor.

Running REALLY rough at startup, then fine once warmed up.

Bogs down climbing hills at WOT though, most often around 3500 rpms. Will run at 3500, then start to miss, then bog down to 3, then almost stall out if i don't let off. No good with the gearing thats in it now. Got another timing light, so going to put it back to the 4 degrees instead of around zero where its set now.

Overall, noticing a huge fuel consumption difference with the 4.10's. Luckily, i got to put a boat behind it for the first time today, and it DEFINITELY holds speed better, so thats good. Will hold OD much easier, and doesn't hunt gears.

Constantly debating if i need to go out and get a 2000-2005 2500 burb and give this thing a rest. I love it, but hard to keep pouring money into it at the rate it am, to only be as functional as it is....

Spend HOURS each day running through this scenario.

Truck is running ok, and getting horrible mileage. Mostly due to my excessive highway speeds, but come on....gotta calc actual mileage, but expecting in the 5-6mpg range right now :doah:
Fuel pressure turned back down to 12.

So, blasted up to Sac last weekend with a new lady friend, took the boat out on the water. Ran ok, went to pull the boat out, and truck wouldn't start. No fuel at injectors. Replaced Ign module, fired right up, drove home.

A week later, go to start truck, no fuel at injectors. Change Ign module again, no luck. Scott suggested pickup coil in dist, but didn't have time to mess with that, so i dropped in a New distributor. Fired up! Planning to get Jegs to refund the money on the distributor i pulled out, ive only had it for 6 mo, and already warrantied it once for the first Ign module.

So, it runs....but still have EGR disconnected. Hopefully the high RPM stumbling was related to the pickup coil going out, and will run better now. We shall see....

If i wasn't working on getting a home loan in the next couple months, I'd have already gotten a loan on a newer burb. I love this thing, but its just not reliable enough for what i need to do, and the time I have to put into it....

I could EASILY be making payments for what i dump into this money pit every month....

Oh, and expert tip. As easy it is to use the remote starter to start the motor up while i'm straddling it under the hood, when its dark, and you're tired....don't put your hand into the fan. :doah:Managed to just nick a finger....but, not cool.

Frustrated.

Sucks man.

Think it's the idle or something sucking up a lot of fuel?

You know, honestly, I know you can't do it right now with the home loan goin on but if i were you I would get the newer truck. All the work I'm doing to my burb is just for fun. I know that it will never be all that i want it to be. I plan on just having it around and driving it for fun nut I plan on getting an 03-07 GMC short bed crew cab witg a 6.0 for all the stuff where I know tys burb will make for an unpleasant day. Imo, you will never get a strait axle old truck to ride, drive, and perform the way a new truck will. Sad but I think that's the reality.

I agree. I don't have too lofty of requirements in the ride, drive, etc, really, im happy with the truck in those regards. Its just the lack of power, decreasing reliability, and $$$ getting poured down the drain over last minute fixes. The truck just isn't up to being Almost DD status anymore.

The car loan will be easy once i get a place, i just don't want to do it the other way around.
