Either way, looking forward to cleaning this truck up. It continues to be good to me, tows (light, short) weekly, and never lets me down.

Paint drop off scheduled for next Friday.
After considering cost or time to uber home or have wife pick me up, i decided to just trailer it.

Have a trailer rental reserved, and acquired adequate tie downs.

So far, disassembly list is as follows;

Pull grill
Pull side markers
Pull tail lights
Pull Bumpers
Measure, then pull side moulding
Pull emblems
Pull window channel trim x5
Pull window guides x5
Pull door panels
Pull mirrors
Pull or loosen door handles

What do i do for access into the vehicle when door handles are removed? Is there a good something to tie a string to or something?

Very excited to get this moving. I've wanted to get this thing pained since i bought it. Probably approaching 20 years of ownership.

I think you can stick your finger in and push to open.
At least my rear barn door is like that
 
And we started!

Transported last Friday.

Started into some body work. Knew I had a little tailpan rust starting, so cleaned it up for rust treatment.

Otherwise, just some body work and paint prep. Everyone loves photos!

Well, it’s back!

Had some rental trailer issues. Ended up renting this 14k 16’ tilt trailer off marketplace. Nice trailer, a bit short, but got enough tongue weight and went for it.


Paint job looks good for what I paid. Dude spent a month on it. Mostly body work, obviously.

It’s not perfect, but it will look good. The goal wasn’t restoration, it was to protect the metal and make it last. So, goal met. Now on to reassembly.

Reassembly has begun!

Drip rails on. 3m seam sealer is a bitch. Used the high torque sheet metal screws from mcbible that David ordered for his rig. They rocked.

Also got 1 side window seal in. With the right tool, and lots of soapy water, it took about 10 min to put the lock strip in. No big deal. Need to dig though my 10 LMC boxes and find the corner pieces. And paint them black.

Pumped to start making progress! This reassembly has been flowing in my head for 6 weeks.

Yeah the tool is a huge time saver. Did one with and one w/o about 45 min saved and my fingers didn't hurt for 2 days after.
 
Tailpan rust. Any tips/tricks to prevent?

This area was taken down to bare metal, primed, painted well.

But i'm looking at the rear plastic trim piece that screws to it, and debating if there is a better plan to prevent rust.

The worst of the rust clearly started around one of these screw holes.

I'm debating sealing around the screw/screw hole area with seam sealant. But does this make it better? worse?

Maybe run a bead across the top intersection of this trim piece and the tailpan, to keep water from pooling?

Don't install the trim piece at all? @ryoken ? Thoughts?

Trim piece i'm talking about is plastic L shape, that screws to tailpan, and fills between body and bumper.

Coat it from end to end, top and bottom in POR-15 or something similar?

Can you get at it from the back around the gas tank?

I need to triple check, but my painter did his absolute best to encapsulate it from both sides.

So, I think it's painted as best as it can be. If factory paint lasted 34 yrs, this round should do ok.

Just trying to search any other "causes" of this rot, and haven't found anything on CK5.
