'93 Blazer build thread

so the weather broke long enough for me to mock the tire on the swing out gate and i was surprised at how really easy it was to swing with the weight on it, and it does sag a bit because of the poly bushing in the hinges but only about a 1/4" so i just had to lift up slightly to align the latch but nothing terrible

so i'll be mounting the spare on there afterall, it will sit a lot higher than this when i'm done though in order to clear the exhaust

Sweet, good to know.

So how much fun did you have holding the spare up there while wrapping the ratchet strap around and around and clicking. :)

Oh dude it was a bitch wrestling that thing up there then holding it with my stomach and 1 arm while attempting to manipulate the straps with the other then I got smart and used the cherry picker and life was good once again:haha:

got my assist ram tacked into place this weekend

i know it may not look like the orientation of the cylinder is best having the ports facing forward but it was really the cleanest way i could think of because of how the fixed end is welded to the cylinder

i'll just have to avoid large or tall obstacles as best I can on that side:whistle:
it's still just behind the 1/4" wall tie rod though

the cylinder is from surpluscenter.com it's a 1.5"x8", 1" shaft OD, and uses 3/4" bolts with swivel mounts at each end, sounded pretty stout to me
http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=9-7258-8&catname=hydraulic

and the tabs are 3/8" thick, i'm going to box the ends with some 1/4" plate

and i have longer bolts for full nut engagement, had these for mock-up though

so i attempted to install my own front gears last night and i think they came out pretty good for a
first timer it took about 6-7hrs but i know a lot more now than i did before i started

final backlash read right at .006" and the range was between 6-10 so i figure even though it's at
the bottom end, it'll leave room for it to "loosen" up over time through wear and not end up outside the limit

here's the drive and coast side patterns i got after more than a few attempts and shim adjustments

I wish I knew how to setup gears. The gears themselves and even the master install kits really aren't that expensive, it's just the labor that kills a guy.

So spooled in the front?

I won't even say I "know" how to install gears even after doing this one, I just applied the knowledge I have in the best possible way I could and hoped for the best.

I would still be weary to setup a rear set that would be used to drive at higher speeds for longer periods of time and that's why I chose to try a front set first.

I just did a lot of reading of various tech articles, manufacturer instructions, and watched some youtube videos by technicians.

I have a bit of experience of working with bearings from the pump repair shop I worked at for 1.5 years, just a few tricks the guys there have been using for 20+years and applied that knowledge here, but all in all it wasn't nearly as difficult or scary a process I had imagined once I was well into it and going through the motions of it.

I'd say go for it and you'll be surprised.

And yup spooled in the front on the basis of cheap, reliable, and strong.

finished up 1 of the crossmember/skidplates this weekend

Your truck is one of my favorites on here and I can't wait to see pics and video:D of it in action:waytogo:

you and me both! i'll hopefully be getting the brakes finished this weekend and all that's left after that is driveshafts to be driveable again, i may extend my old one's again til i get custom balanced shafts made to at least drive it around town and maybe trailer it to a few places just to get out there

but i still need new wheels to set up my Staun beadlocks and weld rock rings on the rims as well and eventually get chromo shafts, but i'll run the stockers for awhile, my stock 44 shafts held up through the rubicon with 37s so i figure the 60s should do well with 40s

got a few things done after work today

added a prop valve for the rear discs

used my old 1" driveshaft spacer i had made back in school and bolted up the temporary driveshaft

bolted up the finished crossmember and started adding to the other one

not that it's very exciting but i installed a new u joint in the short side axle, the one it had was rattling around BAD!

the long side has a sealed spicer joint and is still tight, so that's what i replaced the other with as well

i was bored and thinking of ideas for a full exo and quickly drew this up on paint, would like to hear some thoughts/opinions from you guys

I like it and it really makes the truck look industructable. Which we know there's know such thing but it looks tough:waytogo:

That is way cool man, just dont break your windshield lol, or make the pieces in front of it removable maybe in case of need of replacement sometime, or you could just cut it lol
