'99 4 Door Tahoe SAS Build, Taking it back a few years

What all troubles did you have with the 6.5?

Martin
Man, I could go on for days! But i'll try to keep it short. It really was all the typical issues that the 6.5 is known for, but they just kept coming up, and leaving me stranded again and again. First the PMD. Took 3 of those stranding me before i found the right one to buy and the absolute best place to relocate it to. Then the injection pump itself. Went through 2 of them before i found somebody who knew how to rebuild them so they would last. Then there was the fact that NO ONE local had a clue how to work on them, not even at the local dealership. In order to time the injection pump I had to buy a tech 2 scanner and teach myself. Also, no auto parts stores inventoried anything for it. I was wheeling it in Oklahoma once and the water pump went out. Cost me a day waiting for the local parts store to find one and get it to me. The last straw was when the AC compressor let go. My suburban had rear air. New AC lines for a 6.5 suburban with rear air are discontinued, so rare they no longer make them. They could be custom made, but was going to cost a fortune to have done.

There were other issues, but ultimately it had NO power, didn't get great fuel mileage, and the cool part of having something no one else has isn't really "cool" when you got no AC. :angry1:

Hmmm, I guess I only have 15,000 miles left to enjoy it.

They are 1/2 million mile motors when properly maintained. And i knew that when i bought it. But i just got frustrated with it. They're definitely not for everybody.

Sounds more like you found a lemon...

4door, could you get done better pics of the inside and outside of your fenders where you cut them for your shock towers? I made mine too short...

Sure. If it's not raining this afternoon when I get home, I'll take some for you.

I was able to snap a couple between rain showers last night. My camera sucks, but it will give you kind of an idea of how I did mine. I didn't weld the flat plate in like you did to clean up the frame rail. Because of that, in order to give myself a flat surface to mount the towers, I notched the frame in the lower part and recessed the tower in the notch. Then I welded the crap out of it. After advice from other members, I drilled the 1/2" holes through the frame and bolted it for extra strength. The bolts go between the engine mount on the back side of the frame. Now, I haven't done this yet, and it may or may not need it, but I will weld a brace in backside above the frame rail to give even more strength.IMG_4392[1].JPG

Just a little update on the Tahoe project:

The pace of my build has been slow for the past few weeks. But with the Tahoe out of the garage I've been rebuilding the rear axle. I installed the Detroit locker, 5.13 gears, new bearings, installed new spring perches, new shock mounts, disc brakes and painted the axle.

My hydraulic ATV lift table sure helped make this chore a lot easier on the back. Tonight, the Tahoe comes back into the garage to continue the back half of this project.

So, It's time for an update on the progress of my rig. It has been slow going for this last couple months. Work has really been in the way! The only real way to show progress is with pics. And from what i understand, everyone enjoys pics!!

I'm a long way from done, but am very happy with the progress so far. I still need to get it to the exhaust shop, build a front drive shaft, install the floor shift for the t-case, wire the CB, install the winch, and the list will probably never end.

That looks perfect!!!

Thanks for the perfectly timed update. That gives me enough motivation to keep rolling on mine. Great work dude!

Great! And i don't know why but I'm just realizing you had a build thread for your 6.5 diesel project. I got some reading to do!
