Haha, Step one for me is to make sure that I have enough beer for the project, anxiety of running out early will lead to sloppy work.:eek1: :D

Next time you up this way, make sure that you stop by. I'll make sure that I keep a few saved for you.:woot:

What's with the pulley on the body mount bolt?

Brian,

If you look in post 4 and 6, you should be able to see what I have going on.

I punched a 4x8 hole in the back of the garage to bring in two 20x4x8 beams. I ran these over to the garage header, blocked under and braced.

On the back end, I ran a 20x4x12 the width of the garage. One end I landed on the plate and the other I posted up next to the fridge with a 4x4 sitting on a chunk of 4x12.

I ran 4 axle straps over the 4x8 and connected four come-along's to the front two and rear body mounts. In the center I just ran ratchet straps to eye bolts in position three (I think it's position three, behind the front seats?) over the beam.

Basically my tub is hanging like a pinata from the garage framing without adding any strain to my soup can gusseted truss system.

If I come in to a pinch, like the front drivers floor repair, I built a small braced wall to sit under the frame of the tub. I can then remove the come-along for the needed repairs without any worries of the tub shifting.

All in all I would say it was the best decision as of yet, along with bracing the doors. I can get to any part of the tub with easy access and it will be nice when I apply liner to the bottom of the tub.

On the pic of your drivers side floor panel patch, you got some clamps holding the panel in place. Can you tell me alittle about them. Nice job btw! Its funny when you get a truck that seems to be rust free... I like that you are takeing your time and fixing everything.

Check out Eastwood Company...

They are a butt-weld panel clamp (around $20 for 3 IIRC). They are great for keeping panels aligned and for setting the proper gap for a MIG spot weld. :waytogo:

Thanks,

I bought the clamp's from Eastwood, here is the link.

They are pricey through Eastwood though. It looks like $30.00 still. They also sell them at HF, I think that I bought 8 for $7.00 last time.

To tell you the truth, I can't tell the difference.

Very cool guys I think I`ll have to get them. I`ve used tape or a magnet, but that kind of sucks.

Well I have to say your rust repair skills are way better than mine. In my defense I would just like to add ***** never mind I ain't got no defense your skills are just better. All that fresh metal looks sweet.

Hey......Thanks SBD,

I'm just a finish carpenter trying to do finish carpentry with metal, if that makes any sense.:dunno:

As far as being better at rust, I highly doubt it. The windshield replacement that you pulled off would scare the sh*t out of me. Then add on the new cage, the kick ass stroker...come on man you rock. :waytogo:

Just not sure about your wheels and tires yet, maybe they will grow on me in time.:D

Great read, nice work NorCal69!

Amazing how much fixing a 'rust free' 1st gen really needs...:doah:

Maybe I missed it but what are you doing to keep the door openings & firewall in place during all this surgery?

Thanks a lot VT,

When I bought this rig, I really thought that I wouldn't need to go through
all of this rust repair stuff. I was terrified of cutting into a first gen, being I never have welded before this.

I wish I had a picture of me on the first cut, I'm sure my face was green. I think I cut about 6", stopped, grabbed a beer and sat down for the night just thinking about what I have done.:doah:

As far as bracing the doors, I ended up using a couple of different methods. They seen to be working, as the pass. door fit like a glove after the cutting. When I hung the tub, I leveled it perfect with a Stabila level. Before I did any cutting I braced the door openings, welding a 1"x1" from the top door hinge, directly to the striker plate. I then ran a string (string never lies) from the back/inside of the 1/4 panel, running along the top length of the 1/4 panel to the firewall/dash. This way I can always see if there is any deflection to the tub and or string.

I guess if I don't go hunting this weekend. we will all see if it worked on the drivers side. Next step is to hang my box, tack it in, cut out the door brace and hang the door again.

Man, I hope it works.

Mike

Haha, It worked. :woot:

The drivers door fit really well after all of the rust repair.

I was granted all weekend in the garage, (thanks The Wife!). So I hammered down on the drivers side. I was getting worried and just wanted to hang the door to see what needed to be done.

I cut the door brace with the grinder thinking that this is not going to be good. I thought in the back of my head while cutting, this is going to pinch the cut off wheel and at the very least rip out of my hand.

Low and behold, it went like butter. I ended up with a perfect ~1/8" cut in between the two pieces of brace and nothing moved. This was a good sign for things to come.

Well, as this thread has gone in the past, I'm going to put a couple pages some pics up. Sorry, if it is getting boring with the same old rust pics. But, this is all that I have and putting them up helps me keep on going.

On with the pics.

Both doors need some major work.

The are both cracked at the upper hinge and on the top rail of the door in the same spot.

I welded up the drivers door hinge area. What do you guys think, will it hold? Should I have done something different?

Oh, pic three of the last post is how the night ended.

The last post of pics is of my helpers.:D

Yea don't quit with the rust pics cuz it ain't boring. As far as that gap for the door being hung I wish mine looked like that after I was done. Door hinge Way better than it was Last ???? Guess you'll find out. Mine look kinda like that (Not quite as bad) I think I'm looking at complete replacement anyway due to rust clear thru inner and outer panels. As far as your helpers Your dog is WAAAY bigger than mine and no way will my wife sit in the garage and just hang.(Altho she is looking forward to ripping up the dunes soon) I've set a attempt to roll date for Veterans day weekend for a trial run at Dumont Dunes.

Keep it going
Chris
