Good stuff Mike!

I can't 100% understand where your next tubes are going, but it sure seems like you will need to triangulate behind those two new bars back into the frame so that they don't deflect backwards if you ever catch a bumper corner on a rock. Gotta keep a close eye on tire clearances (hard left, hard right & stuffed) so that the next braces you add don't block the tires.....

Every time you post new pics I think wow nice work Mike...a lot of time and thought put into that! Looks good! :waytogo:

Love the COMPETITION briquettes!! :haha::haha:

Thanks Dean... :waytogo:

Looking good dude!

At least it's something that hopefully represents some progress. :pimp:

Greg,

I started to look at it yesterday, then gave up and took the kids out to a movie and such.

Hopes were to use that new bar(s) as the back bar and hopefully either install a gusset forward of that, or better yet a low bar running the length of the bottom of the bumper. Which ever one I run, they would need to land behind or between the two bolts that pretty much hold everything together up there. I might need to down size the tube to a 1.5 and maybe even use an insert (1.25??) inside the 1.5 leading out towards the ends to gain a little clearance.

I think either of these two plans will lock that plate in for a hit from the front or a tree stuck between the bumper and fang moving backwards.

Having a tough time trying to figure out the tube work and or plate work to really beef up the existing tin can. Just not a lot of room behind the bumper, especially between the fang and bumper.

I kinda have a thought of frenching in two tubes in the front of the fang with a small bend at the end following the curve of the bumper. All of this would be covered, just don't want to hack up the fangs, if I go another route just yet.

It will take some time to get everything the way I want, so I'm moving pretty slow at this point.

Kinda funny to see VT back today, as I think that he started all this original bumper stuff for us both back when. :haha:

Mike,

Have you already "86ed" your body mounts? I see the 1" pucks in there but cant tell if you still have rubber underneath them or not.... You are at a critical decision-point now, if you want to hard-mount the tub now is the time to do it. The bumper is only going to look right if you set it up for the bodymount/puck setup that you plan on running. Too much lift in that area and you might find that your uber-recovery points actually don't poke through the original bumper but may end up sitting in 3-sided notches in the bottom of the bumper instead...

In terms of stiffening up the bumper give some thought to building-out the backside of the bumper (think honeycomb structure) especially on the unsupported ends. This might work better than trying to reach way out there with a tube from the frame somehow. This is my plan when I finally get to that phase of the build... You'll have to have the new 300-Lb bumper rechromed once it's all built but such is life. :)

I could be totally wrong, (Easily done) but I don't think that the mounts come into play yet. I still have the rubber in there in all of the spots. Eventually, probably close to body work, I was going to call up Kert and see if he could spin me off all 12 of them. They are all going to be different by a little, so it might cost a couple of bucks to do, but I'm this far into a hard mount and would hate to have it all rip apart, due to some rubber in there.

I do hear ya and understand what you are saying though. That is one of the reasons that it took so long to mount the bumper. It's not just the bumper, it's the doors, fenders, cowl, frame and core support that all had to be dead on before I could tack in those plates. When I made those little ramps for the mounting of the center section of the bumper, it raised it by just a 1/4" which was a great thing. I was too close on the fangs for my liking. It did mess up the cut a little around the uber, but that was all good. I needed to make some small sleeves that will slide on the bumper and around the ubers to close them up. One of my cuts was a little too wide on the drivers side..

So, honeycomb, you say. I like that Idea, but I also don't. I really want to use the bumper as just a skin. I know down the line it will get messed up and I won't like it. 150 clams and 1 hour with the jig saw and a template and whammo, it will be good as new. It might come to the honeycomb, but I'd much rather it not. Although, it may come to that down the line.

Thanks for the idea though. Here are a couple pics of the mount. Maybe I'm not seeing where the mounts come into play just yet????

Thanks Brother!!!

Thanks Brother. Good to see that work slowed down for a second. Missed having ya around. :waytogo:

Work has been insane!!
I'm back in the forum due to withdrawal!!!!
Still very busy but with the Silver lake get together coming up I needed to get back in touch with the brotherhood...

Gota maintain some selfish priorities!:waytogo:

God that's a good looking pic!

I know you are doing a ton of work but it is paying off with a beautiful end result man. Just awesome!

I just wanted to make sure that you weren't going to change the height of the cab at those mount points when/if you pull the rubber out. Sounds like you are having custom mounts made to match the total height of the current puck, shims & rubber mount, yes?

If that's the case, then in the words of Macellus Wallace: "you ain't got no problems Jules...". :)

That was/is the plan if someone will cut them up for me. Really don't know or have checked on it. I just think that they will come out better than cutting some tube and welding the ends closed with a bolt hole through them.

What's your plan? :haha:

Well, I need to finish my coffee, and have a little breakfast....then I need to get Charlie to summer camp by 9AM. :haha:

....beyond that my plan was to just turn down one of my many sets of aluminum pucks that I already own to act as permanent mounts. The only thing I thought would be important would be to machine the underside of each one so that instead of being 2" flat across, it would have the profile of the "through hole" for each body mount cut into them. So basically the puck would interlock with the hole instead of just sitting on top of it. That should give it a bit more shear strength.

Shim-wise, I was going to leave those separate. Maybe tack weld them to the underside of the body before I do any painting/undcoating?

I'm a little jealious. My plan got shot down today. One of my guys showed up to my house with a half enpty dump trailer. Dad, is coming in next week, so it was time to clean up the place a little. 1/2 acre with oaks can litter this place in no time.

On the other hand I just bent up the two bars for the other side. Don't expect to get much done, but at least the bending is done so I don't need to yank out the dies again this week.

Can't wait to see some updates on your's. You must be on some crazy vacation again, huh?
