For the price of freight I will send you a Sanden type, made in CHINA just like Sanden is, that replaces the R4. New in the box, never been used. I brought it several years ago to replace my R4 and then decided to use the newer serpentine setup. If your not interested ,this is an open offer.

If it's at 50 psi and it keeps kicking on and off you need more refrigerant. You have to read the pressure will the compressor remaining on. You'll notice that the pressure will rise as the compressor kicks off and then drop when it cycles back on. On a hot day, you'll want to look at a steady pressure while the system running.
The actual weight of the refrigerant charge should be on the side of the evaporator box. If you're using R134a though, you have to charge a little less. I used the envirosafe refrigerant, which requires a lot less weight, is cheap, and seems to cool well. Use the temperature/pressure chart. The little Walmart cans with the gauge only show low side pressure, which will work but is kind of a hack way to do it, since you need to see high side pressure in order to make sure there are no issues and everything is working properly.

had a problem on my wife's dodge where the fans weren't cooling properly and the high-side pressure was too high - almost 400. and it would kick off protecting the system - not sure if you have that safety in your system or not...

this is the crap ones that come with the gauges

if the engine was not running that will happen. it equalizes pressure in the system. Hook up gauges and start the engine, ac on, fan on and see what the pressures are.

learn something new everyday
well when its running the compressor kicks on and off too fast to get a reading.
do you have to jump it to make it run to get proper charge?

Just connect your gauges. Leave the valves closed. You should still be able to read pressures. You are low on freon and it sounds like you have a considerable leak since it appears you have added freon during the course of this thread. I would recommend you take it to a mechanic shop and let them find the leak and charge it properly for you.

already found the leak and fixed it. dont want to pay thew mech 500 bucks to charge system

I'll take it off your hands if you still have it. Mine sprung a leak on the front shaft seal.
