A modern day K5?

Which year would you guys want Icon to do?

Also, since money is no object for Icon do you think they would do a carbon fiber removable top?? :D

For me it would be the 72 CST body with soft top.

If Icon did a blazer, I'd be in for a 1st Gen. The only thing is that a lot of the drivetrain is specific to that generation (unlike '73-91). Then again, if they're only using the body, they can modify it to be able to use more "generic" parts. I wonder if they can do an aluminum body like the FJ?

That would be amazing if they did the aluminum body... I wonder what kind of weight savings you'd get?

Aluminum body with carbon fiber hard top.... :P

If you Have the money you can build it. I never liked the idea of letting someone else build a truck for me. Half the fun is working on it and modifying it yourself. I caught the might as well bug and did a few mods a few years back then got divorced and with all I pay in support and new family to take care of the blazer may take forever to be finished. The problem is a lot of people have huge expectations and take on more work than they can do. Then the truck sits for years or just plain gets neglected and doesn't get finished and worse of all scrapped if it comes to it. The other problem is yearly inspections where a vehicle has to be perfect to Stay On the road for the most Part. Older vehicles are harder to keep up to Legal specs and after 40 years like mine it's even tougher. At least mine doesn't have to be Immissions compiant but for the 75-91 blazer crowd it's even tougher to Modify your truck and still stay compliant with the rules. I've thought about antique plates but then you still Have to jump hoops and the truck has to be mostly stock outside to get them. So no lift or oversize tires. Stock rims and other rules. A old bodied newer component blazer would be awesome to see chevy bring back. If someone started remaking them first gen blazers were definitely my favorite. With the 87-91 coming in second. I really like the four headlight setup. Hope you can at least get yours running and go wheeling zombieblazer now that you are moved.

Chulisohombre, thanks so much man. :) Having a garage seems like an incredible luxury after living in apartments my whole life.

One thing I need to check is the smog issues. That was a really nice aspect of living in California - diesels were exempt from smog checks. Hopefully Oregon is the same. It sucks that they don't sell more diesels in the US though for the people that can't get them.

I heard that you can't switch gas vehicles to diesel as well and get smog exempt status. What is up with that rule? How can they even get something like that passed? Crazy.

I agree that having it built would take some fun away. With mine, I'm looking for a beater rig. The rust and holes don't bother me because I can beat it through the woods and not worry. A $50-150k rig is not only out of my budget for ANY vehicle, but not what I want and I wouldn't buy one.

I've got around $3k in my K5 including purchase and mods. I figure another $3-4k in it over the next few years should get what I want out of it and be done as I doubt I will ever want to go bigger once I get 35-37" tires and as flat a bottom as possible on a side project budget.

My dream vehicle is something that I could load up and by myself drive cross country over any terrain without worrying about breaking down. I don't know if the Icon vehicles could handle that but they may be able to handle it better than anything I could make because I don't have enough knowledge of vehicles/engineering to compete with a team of engineers.

Ideally I would like to do some really wild stuff to make a vehicle that could go anywhere and get out of nearly any situation.... but that would likely cost a fortune. I would like to bring this independence to others who are interested in this kind of thing, too. I have some wild ideas along these lines.. people might think I am nuts if I tried to explain them though. haha

I'm not one who usually posts funny pictures in threads but if I was I would be posting that guy from the Jizz in my pants SNL skit... haha

That Icon Diesel looks amazing insane cool.

Carcinogen, thanks! I don't remember ever seeing one like this. I think it's an interesting vehicle because the body work would be so easy for someone to do themselves on this.

I have been trying to find vehicles with the simplest body work to get ideas.

yeah, it looks like that right rear quarterpanel would just buff right out...

haha

That looks like the most complex part of the vehicle which is probably why they didn't fix it.

I am hoping I could find some solution for that too - simplify that corner or use some different material there.

But I am also wondering if a simple body like that could be stylized somehow to make it more interesting/attractive to people.

Scouts and willys jeeps are kinda that way.

Funny you mentioned that because I was looking at the Icon Willys Jeep and it gave me that idea to try to do the same with the Blazer body possibly. What I am thinking is that it would be cool to make a kit body for the Blazer especially with a fold down front window and flat doors to fit it.

They make fiberglass bodies for the k5.

The answer to question one is NO "modern" vehicle comes close to the old K5's as far as styling and utility,durability...todays tupperware trucks are not even trucks any more, they have sissified them too much with IFS and cushy interiors...more like caddilacs with an 8 foot bed than trucks..

I wish GM had some cahonies and build a few "retro" vehicles, and yeah, not the HHR's,what a POS those things are, they were just a copycat move to compete with the PT Cruiser (another POS,its just a Neon with a somewhat cool looking body slapped on it)...the other thing GM made that looks like an old Studebaker truck looks cool, but is useless as far as hauling anything...

They should bring back the first and second generation pickups and K5's,maybe upgrade them to 4 wheel discs and keep solid axles under them, the 14 bolt being the smallest available option!..with a newer V8 or a inline diesel drivetrain (Like the big Isuzu box trucks used that some have put in older GM trucks with good results) would be cool...
I bet a lot of older customers like myself wouldn't mind a plain old 350 with a 4 bbl being under the hood either...the new 6 speed manuals and automatics would be a nice upgrade...

Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but I wish we could walk into a GM dealer and plop down some cash, and drive off in a "brand new" 1969 GTO, a Chevelle SS 454,or a 70's vintage K5...I bet they would be surprised at how many they'ed sell....

100% AGREE WITH ALL OF THIS :thumb:
