Allis-Chalmers tractor purchase. Now, The Old Tractor thread. Post yours.

Plus plenty of electric motors. Friend of mine uses one as a rotary phase converter to run the machine equipment in their shop

Dragging this guy out of the shed for some much needed maintenance and repairs. Closest thing to new my family has ever owned. It’s a 1966 that my late grandpa bought in 1971 and it’s been in the family since. Mom and Dad bought it off grandpa probably 20 years ago and we used it quite a bit for awhile. For the last 10-12 years it’s pretty much just sat. I don’t think the charging system has worked since I’ve been alive either.

Getting it started again yestersymorning, we used it to rake some hay but the 52 year old fuel system was fighting back and it struggled. Had my mom and sister run after parts while Dad and I tore into it.

Carb getting ready for a rebuild. Dropped it in the chem-dip Saturday around 2 and pulled it out this morning around 6:30. Amazing what 16 hours soaking will do. It was nasty prior to going in.

All done. Used the blast cabinet at work on my H carb and have to say the chem-dip worked better as long as you’ve got the time to let it work.

Success! It hasn’t ran this good in years. Also hasn’t idled in years either. Now to just figure out the charging system

What engine is in the D15?

It’s a 160ci if memory serves, can still see where the old “power crater” sticker was stuck to the block. I just stuck the bore scope down #3 and confirmed that it needs an overhaul. Going to run it for odd little jobs and make the overhaul happen next summer.

Cool. Way to bring this thread allllllll the way back to it's original brand.

We had a WD45, and I can't think of anything bad to say about it. Even when the main driveshaft snapped and I had to rip the whole thing apart. I loved that thing almost as much as my yellow beast. Almost. It was certainly a more capable tractor.

I’ve passed up a couple cheap WD45’s at auction this year and regret passing up both of them. I need to just buy the next one

78K30 ,I'd put a GM alternator on it,either a 10SI or a one wire type,no more charging problems ..especially if it has a generator with an external regulator ,that's the way to go..

I have seen many of the A/C WD45 and I think "B" models that are very similar,do quite well at tractor pulls against other unmodified farm tractors..

I like the simple frame rails and how beefy they are built, and the fact the tractor isn't just a transmission and engine and rear end all bolted together ,no frame!... looks to me to be weaker, though they probably aren't..

I’ve akready looked up a one wire 10Si. Going to try the cheap route off amazon for a 68 amp one. Could also use my externally excited one off of the K20 I just haven’t decided yet

Some tractors had wider fan belts than typical ones on cars & trucks--if yours does, you may be able to find a pulley from a medium duty GM truck alternator that fits a 1/2" v belt rather than the thinner 7/16" belt used on cars and light trucks..
I have swapped a pulley off an old generator to a 10SI we had found in a pile of generators at an old junkyard that had a pulley almost 1" wide, the taper in the bore happened to fit fine...the tractor had a thick v-belt and no other pulleys with smaller sheaves on the engine we could use to drive the alternator..

I’ve gotta swap belts anyways, for some reason the D15’s used a smaller than normal belt. Like frickin pencil sized. So when I get it off I’ll go to Napa’s basement and start matching up to find what I want

A 3L or 3/8" fractional HP belt will work on most stock GM alternator pulleys OK--a kevlar belt will grip better and hold up much longer...if your belt is thinner than that (which sounds ridiculously small for a tractor!),I'd say maybe adding another pulley to the engine's crank might be a good idea..

Most guys run the larger belt from another tractor. It’s a relatively common deal so luckily I won’t run into issues. My H fan belt can’t even be tightened and the alt belt runs off the fan hub so this thing is already miles ahead even with the old belt
