AMG's newest engine

That is the old "improved design" from a couple years ago. Big difference when you just look at the oil pan and skirt on the motor posted above.

so does anyone have for sure pricing and availability of these new engines??

Hi again,

I've done some research so far and (as the $ is quite weak nowadays ) a new AM General 6.5 would be a heck of a deal for my K5. The AMG block would (only) cost me about 3.5k Euros and would be a tremendous starting base for any upgrades & more power for my good old K5. I already have some offers for my old 6.2 and 5.0 smallblock, (about $ 2500 for both engines (!) + adding all the parts I already have bought for my old 82 6.2 which I could sell for quite much money, a new AMG block really is affordable for me....
The only thing I do not know is how I can get this thing into my K5, I read somewhere, that the bottom of these engines makes it impossible for me to get it into my k5, but I do not know for sure.... so do you guys know anybody who already has put the 6.5 in a pre 91 K Series pickup or blazer?

As always, thank you very much for your qualified help and advice!

Greetings from the sunny bavarian mountains

If you compare this picture:

to this:

you'll see that that cast oilpan reaches more towards the front of the engine, so it probably hits the front crossmember, but custom one will fix it. Other than that, I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

edit// Maybe it could make contact whit front axle, especially with D60, but there's a cure for that, too. Enough lift, relocating axle forward...

Hey,

thanks for your help. I already stumbled across that, there's an excellent write-up on the dieselpage of a guy who put the p400 in his new body style k2500. he also had him built a custom oilpan...
I need to have that engine! :D:D:D

Dunno the clearance differences but remember the newer trucks have the big ass IFS crossmember and the diff right up under the engine. I *think* we have more clearance than them...whether it is enough I can't say.

@AJMBlazer:

thanks a lot for your help. Well I think I'd somhow could make it work in my K5. I'm just not sure what else I'd need for that engine (IP, water pump and such) From what I know until now, I think the DB2-4911 IP would be great for me.
Basically here is what I want:

As I have put a lot of $ and time in my K5 until now, I'd want to have a good, bullet-proof (diesel-) engine for my K5. Of course, more power always is a great think, but I think I'm gonna run that engine without a turbo first. If you consider Dr. Lee Swangers custom NA 6.5 diesel engine as comparison, I hope I easily could get between 170 - 190 HP out of the P400 & the DB2-4911.

Why it has to be a diesel? I hope you can blieve me, but I have never owned a gasser before nor did my parents and most of the people I know. Since the late 70s, the small but quite powerful diesel engines are very popular in Germany. Fuel is much more expensive over here (btw: diesel fuel is cheapest ) than in the states, so fuel efficient cars are and always have been bestsellers... => so, half up to 2/3ds of the cars over here are Diesels. Have driven several older +newer VWs, Mercedes and Audis (1.9l - 2.8l Diesel Engines, ) and owned a Nissan Patrol 3.3l Diesel. The best mpgs I got was in a VW 1.9l turbodiesel with 140 HP, constantly gets 52mpg and drives like hell. The Patrol 3.3 got an average of 23 MPG, the same mileage I got with my red block 6.2.
I have never had anything to do with carburators or spark plugs in my entire life, so I do not want to have a gas powered truck, though I like the "performance" of the 5.0 i had in my jimmy.

You're welcome but always remember, I'm pulling half of this out of my ass.:wink1:

(Or just the dark recesses of my mind)

The diesel powered vehicles are understandable. Too bad America is about 50 years behind. I'd love a small diesel 4x4 pickup to DD and parts chase with.

Bavarian Blazer,
I don't want to disappoint you, but you may have some trouble getting a new AMG engine overseas . That export of that particular engine is restricted by ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations). It is illegal for an American individual or company without certain licenses to export that engine because it is primarily for use in the HMMWV. This is silly, I know, but it is the way things are.

I had to fill out an end-use affidavit when I bought a surplus 6.5L diesel made by AMG stating that I would not export, sell, or give it to a foreign national/country without proper authorization from the State Department.

If, on the other hand you have a valid source figured out, then go for it!

So if a civilian overseas with a K2500 with a dead 6.5L wanted an engine how would he get a replacement engine? Through GM only?

For a run-of-the-mill civvy 6.5 it probably wouldn't really be a problem - there are tons of suppliers for those (including GM). I found it quite ridiculous that I had to swear not to export mine when it was not much different than the civvy version (and the Chinese already make copycat blocks and heads).

The very newest 6.5's from AMG I am guessing are a different story. They are primarily a defense contractor and that latest incarnation of their 6.5 isn't found in any civvy road vehicles. It is a different animal than the older 6.5's...

Some of this stuff is just plain silly, like I said, but it may be a potential logjam. As an example, it is illegal (unless properly authorized) to sell an Eotech or ACOG sight overseas. The ITAR list is enormous.

Hey,

I understand your concerns, in fact, I am not allowed to buy surplus engines directly from US Army sales or surplus stores without having the permission to. Concerning the 6.5 /AMG p400, I'm allowed to buy it directly from AM Gerneral or their retailers. Peninsular.com f.e. is offering the new 6.5 Blocks for various applications on global scale. As government surplus sales usually are quite a steal, they don't want foreign/enemy nations to gain profits from it. But I do not think that a single persion or any country without certain restricitions is unable to purchase as many engines from an US factory as he likes.
BTW:o
there are a lot of surplus dealers over here that are offering tons of U.S. Army stuff... You still can get "new" (old stock/out of some depot) m1008/m1009s, M35 s and tons of 6.2 engines over here...

Greetings

Flo

There should be no fitment problem of the P400 is a solid axle Chevy. The engine crossmember in an OBS truck goes under the harmonic balancer, so there is no interference with the pan. The problem comes when trying to put it into a newer IFS truck - the diff and support crossmember hit the aluminum pan.

I have one on my "To Buy" list for my rig... hopefully within the next year

When they went to serpentine belt setups they mounted the vacuum pump on the serp accessory brackets. It is driven off the back side of the belt, and also doubles as an idler pulley.

@Max:

are you sure that a p400 would fit my truck? Several guys on the diesepage/dieselplace said it would't fit without a custom oil pan?

As far as picing is concerned: I found out that an 6.5 Optimizer would cost me about $ 5600 , a p 400 roughly $ 6000.

I could be wrong, but the guys over at diesel place/page are talking about it not fitting in the NBS trucks (IFS).
