And my 14bsf adventure begins...

Some small progress. I had a local machine shop make my 1/2" spacers. ($50) My brake parts should be here today or tomorrow. I need to go pull a 10b yoke so I don't have to change the ujoint, maybe some 1/2" studs. Plans are to assemble my collection of parts to see what I've overlooked and start putting it all together this weekend. I don't think I would even attempt doing this without the knowledge, experience and expertise shared in the tech threads. If I mess this up, I'll just trade it for a billy goat and then shoot the forking goat.

Anyone near Clarksville Ar is welcome to come point and laugh. I'm slow, but at least I'm disorganized.

I don't know if I told you already, or if you know, but the dust shield on the 10B yoke needs flared out so that it doesn't hit the seal.

Yes, the short story is that all of the shafts will fit in all of the housings, but there are different lengths based on the different brake options and track widths. The longest shafts put you at about the same track width as the front. There is a 14Bsf tech thread.

Also, should you break a shaft on a SF axle, a disc brake puts you in a better situation than a drum brake. You might trash the brake getting off the road or getting off the trail, but the wheel will generally stay in place. You need to use 4WD or have a locker to move in RWD, of course. They tend to break up near the splines, but a break near the hat might let the wheel move around enough to keep you from moving the vehicle anyway.

Where is the 14b SF tech thread? at some point i am going to have to replace the axles in mine.

It's alive! Drove about 5 miles kinda slow so I could hear. No whines or crunchy sounds. I've got maybe 1/2" of compression left on the driveshaft, so I'll be needing to shorten it maybe an inch...dammit.

Or move the axle. Are you running easy inches?

Forgot to mention added bonus of new vibrations from the driveshaft. Of course that will change again when I shorten it...then it will.be something else. I found one shock has depressurized itself, so here goes $400 for bilsteins all around. Found a leak in the exhaust, there's another several hundred to replace it all. It's only been on there 22yrs.

The junk 83 10b that got me home had the 2 3/4" wide brakes, the 97 Silverado that donated the brakes and backing plate has 2 34" shoes. Eyeballed side by side they're identical.
