and so it has begun I need ideas!

Nice...

Nothing like cutting up a rig...

It comes apart so fast, but goes back together like molasses...

I'm glad I didn't have a cut-off wheel or saw-z-all in my hand when I checked this thread...:D

I really like your truggy
Do you have a build-thread with the rest of the work you've done on it?

Thanks!

No real thread on it anywhere, I helped a buddy build most of it, then he got married moved to cali, my blazer was ready to fall apart so I got this truck from him. Put my axles in it, and proceded to wheel it.

full size trucks are just have too much body for rockcrawling, at least the kind I do.

With this phase I actually intend to build the roll cage so that it can be fully enclosed for winter wheeling, it will still have a heater ( not the stock one) I like to be comfy so it make sense to me to do this

this is cool Eric....I'm keeping an eye on it....how bout that pizza?

Not a very productive day for me today, some pics tomorrow should have the seats mounted.

The front seat mount turned out pretty cool. Bent some tubing to tie the sliders into the seat mounts (which are of course the basis for the cage) so everything will be tied in together. Sunk it into the floor on the tranny tunnel just a bit, I think it will look cool after all the welding and blending is done. Didn't get them mounted all the way because of the rear, still need to figure out how to run the bar across the back of the floor, well pretty much under the floor, so both the front mounts on the seats and the rear mounts will be part of the cage but still be able to unbolt the seats easily.

That reminds me I got to order harness sometime soon. Don't have the fundage to get the ones I want, might just wait till the last minute to get them or just get lap belts for now

Check ebay or craigslist, race cars have to get rid of them every year or two to pass inspection.

finally a bit of an update. Been sick alot of this month and last. Had to catch up at the shop and everywhere else. Got the main tube bent and the seats in.

Harnesses should be here on Friday so I will get those mounted. going to try to get the rest of the front portion of the cage done on Friday or Saturday, gonna turn out sweet I think doing it a little different than most do there cages Here is a pic that gives an idea of what I am going to do thats different and should look nice

Keep the updates flowing. I am eagerly following this thread. I plan to start cutting mine soon.

I plan on doing a bunch tomorrow night so hopefully the whole front and most of the main cage done

Even though there is no windsheild frame I am trying to keep the same profile as the orginal cab. I still want it to emulate Chevy pickup. Front fenders I have decided will stay, I have some bedsides I think I am going to try to get put on too.

chop two feet outta the center :haha:

Btw, got those parts out yet? not trying to rush ya. Just got my ac charged and luckily cables stuck on ice cold frigid :D

Hopefully this weekend Ryan, you know cause everything always goes according to plan right?

Dam Eric, wish I was there to help/learn, but not hinder the progress. I need some schoolin'.

Got the vast majority of the main structure done. One more tube to bend and then a whole lot of crossbars and bracing bars and gussets and welding.

My harness didn't get here yet so I won't be able to finish it up till Monday.

Plus I now need to relocate the gas tank get the back seat mounted and start to figure out what to do about seat belts for the back.

This back seat is pretty much going to be for my kids so its not really built to accommodate an adult it will sit about 5" lower than in this pic. The gas tank which is under the seat will be getting moved to behind the seat.

This shows what I did that is different than most cages on Chevys I have seen. I am still going to put the fenders back on the front so the bottom of the front tube will disappear. I think it looks pretty good now and will look really good with the fenders on

Now to make a whole bunch of triangles

And a bunch of gussets and tie in plates. Anywhere the tube is close to the body is going to get tie in plates. Going to try to put gussets on all the welded joints.

Any ideas for harness in the back. I need to be able to put a carseat back there for now. Soon will need to put two back there. Bailey is almost out of her carseat. I am thinking Jr. dragster harness but I would like to look at them first. Whatever I put back there will be more than just a lap belt. I might try to find a normal car 3 point and try to adapt it

Well back to work

Looks great Eric, I like the idea of the front downtube being hidden behind the fender too.
I was surprised at how high the car seat makes the kids when added to a bench seat. Can you throw her car seat/ booster in there and measure for head clearance before you go to much further?

The gas tank is getting relocated so that rear seat will be able to sit right down on the frame. I measured her car seat and it seems to sit about 5" off the cushion of the car seat. Bailey can sit in there right now with quite a bit of clearance between her head and the nearest bar. Thats her without her car seat. So when I move the tank and put the seat right down on the frame, she should have ample clearance.

That rear seat is certainly not meant for adults but I put one of my friends in there and with him sitting up right now he is pretty close to one of the bars but he doesn't hit it.

I could never sit back there, but my wife might be able to and most anyone under about 5'10" should be able to sit back there.

The front part I built so I would never have to worry about hitting my head. I am 6'2" with a long torso so I sit higher in the seat than most. I have enough clearance on all the planned tubes to wear a helmet and still clear them all.

Very excited about this. Its turning out very nice

still lots to do but at least I am making progress, still gotta put pretty much 2 more sticks of tube in there. Door bars, roof braces, seatbelt bars, still some to do on the sliders.

I am going to mount my spare tire on the backside of the cage.

Another thing you might be wondering. I am going to link the rear sooner than later so I built the cage to where I plan to cut the frame off. So soon the cage will actually come back to where the frame ends, where as now the frame goes past it

One measurement I have taken is rocker clearance, I have 36" of rocker clearance. Thats with 42s and around 3" of lift

Very cool Eric...again nice job dude!
