my 700r4 wont go into 4rth gear it shifts fine through 3rd and the converter seems to lock up in third but it wont go into dont go into fourth
please help im ready to shoot this thing

Mine did this a while back. When you have it in OD at highway speed, do you have engine braking when you let off the throttle?

Same problem as mine. I went through lengths to try and fix. Checked adjustment of TV cable, changed fluid and filter, removed valve body, installed shift kit. No dice. I just dealt with it running in 3 speeds, keeping the gear selector in the "D" position. Then one day running around up in the hills, I ran it in 4 low(unusual for me at the time). On the ride back down the trans shifted to OD. All I can figure is that something was sticking and the shock applied while in 4 low Un - stuck it. This was over 6 years ago, the transmission is still running to this day currently turning 37's. Not saying it will fix yours but give it a try, couldn't hurt.

Well if it goes into 3rd, the 3-4 clutch is working. If it goes into 2nd, the 2-4 band is OK. There are some hard part failures that could cause this, but there are a couple of smaller things worth looking at.
-The servo that applies the band is actually 2 separate pistons. The inner one applies in 2nd gear the outer in 4th. There could be a bad seal and the servo is pretty easy to pull and inspect.
-There could be a sticking valve. Pulling the valve body to clean can be tricky, but it's a lot less work than pulling the whole tranny. It will also give you a chance to see what's in the pan and if there is any widespread debris in the valve body.
-There's also a small chance the governor isn't working right. If you haven't noticed any changes in shift point, then it's probably fine. But again, it's pretty easy to pop out and inspect.

You never know, you could get lucky.

Mine did that a couple weeks ago, I reset the TV cable problem solved.

If the governor shaft is loose in the governor body it can cause a loss of fourth gear, might want to have a look at that as well.

Yes it sounds wierd but it seems to mostly affect 4th gear, I have seen it a dozen times or more over the years, I think it has to do with governor speed and increased instability.

Hold governor like this, grab the gear end and make sure the shaft is not loose in the body you are holding.

hey Greg
I owe you big time THANK YOU for the advice on the Governor i took the one out of the original 87 700r4 and checked it it felt tight so i took the one out of the 92 thats in there now and IT WORKS it shifts great
i wasnt expecting fluid to come out but not a big deal
now i just have to double check the TV cable again to make sure its correct
it shifts good and firm and seems to shift at the correct speeds i dont remember what rpm 2nd engages but 3rd is at 40-45 and 4th is around 55-60
but once again thank you for taling the time to give advice

Greg, I'm so glad you frequent this board. I think way too many trannies get pulled for full rebuild just because somebody couldn't figure out what was actually wrong with them. So the rumor mill perpetuates that every symptom requires a full rebuild. Meanwhile, you regularly bring REAL INFO that helps us all understand these slushboxes better. Plus, you just saved this guy $1k.

Kudos to Greg for lending us his experience and time!..:waytogo::bow:..

I only wish I could be that lucky, and find something simple wrong with the 700R4 in my '85 Suburban..I got lucky on my 81 G-10 vans TH350 when it was just a stripped govenor gear, and I found that out before pulling the tranny out.(in that thing its a cake walk though--you can practically unbolt everything from the drivers seat and two thru-bolts hold the crossmember in it..a half hour job compared to a 4x4!)..

But..I probably wont be so lucky with the Suburban..
since it wont shift into OD most of the time and wont engauge reverse after a good ride (15+ miles I was told by the PO,but it works fine in my driveway?..)--I assume something internal is bad, like the
sunshell or the other woes the earlier versions suffered from..being behind a diesel for 150K,I assume its ready for burial..:doah:
