Another Mystery Wire

On the left side down where that is, could it be one of the wires to the back up lights, via the reverse switch on the trans?

That's a good point...my backup lights don't work...where is the reverse switch on the transmission?

Somebody put in a crate engine...something tells me they didn't make notes where the wires went back.

I don't know if your truck even has a reverse switch on the trans, but, it's a possibility.
I may have read your post wrong. is that wire on the driver side (left) or passenger side(right)?
What trans do you have? Make and model?

That is not factory in a 70 square body blazer and pickups. The wire for the fuel gauge should leave harness by the starter and run down the passenger side frame rail. It should be the ONLY wire that runs down the passenger side frame rail.

Well...there is a single wire that runs down the passenger rail...I think it is the light brown colored wire in this picture...but I swear the wire that was run to the gas float came out the drivers side rail...

Someone has definately been in there doing something for sure as i've NEVER seen any wire loom anywhere near the fuel pump area ever.
Actually that is factory, "sort of" for this year blazer. I kind of forgot how the wires are routed on the 73,74 since I rerouted mine ages ago. The loom goes from the intake valley, down the front of the motor, then goes along the oil pan. There should be a few studs instead of bolts along the pan rail so you secure the loom with clamps. I think the PO should have routed the harness under the fuel pump instead of to the side of it.

THM350 and the wire is actually kind of centered, but it comes out of the loom that is coming from the stater and runs up over my fuel pump as seen in that picture...

Those "clamps" are still on there...they are real tight and I think that may be where the sparks were coming from...when the clamp grounded on something...

Is this part of the big wiring system, or is this a seperate harness that I could replace without replacing everything?

Or am I screwed and have to replace all my wiring?

That should be the wire that goes to the fuel gauge. I couldn't tell from your earlier pics if it was hooked up.

Is your truck a manual?
Manuals have the switch on the transmission.
Auto have the switch on column inside the cab.
Thinking ahead, your blazer was probably a manual at one time and someome swapped in an auto.

It's an automatic and the original sticker in the glove box that matches the VIN code says it came with a TH350.
Maybe the switch is bad in the column? or the wiring is bad back at the tailights...I have never looked at them yet.

So, is the general concensus that the black wire I have to my temp sensor is not the right wire?
And likely the green dangling wire went to the temp sensor? it is bare because somebody cut it and later stripped it to pigtail it.

The reason I thought the black wire was correct is because when I ground it the temp gauge moves...

What's it cost to get a new wiring loom put in? If I took it to the auto electric place?

Here I have two different engine harness for a 73, 74. The top one has wires for A/C and the back up light switch for a manual. These are not for sale. I don't know how good of shape these are in.

Is that the whole wiring harness that wires the whole truck?

Does that plug into the firewall?

I may have missed something

what is working?

fuel
choke
temp
oil
tach?
AC
alt exciter
lights

Is the sparking from THIS wire or some other wire?
Is this wire constant hot, ign hot, or some kind of switched hot?

never mind the color, just pull the shielding off and find where it goes, but this thread needs some serious clearing up, unless I missed that

Can I buy just that wiring somewhere? or do the rewiring kits only contain everything?
American Auto wire has a replacement harness. From the catalog I downloaded, it is about $114 dollars just for the engine harness.

I may have missed something

what is working?

fuel: Yes, it was working until I developed a short (ground problem) when I turn on the headlights

choke: Has a carburetor on it now without an electric choke
temp: I thought it was working until said headlight switch short...they work until I turn on the headlights.

oil: is manual...yes it works

tach?: Doesn't have one

AC: much to my surprise, yes..with R134a

alt exciter: ???

lights: All lights and blinkers work except for the backup lights

Is the sparking from THIS wire or some other wire?
The sparking came from the big trunk that this wire goes into..sparking on or near the oil pan.

Is this wire constant hot, ign hot, or some kind of switched hot?
The green wire that I don't know what itis, does not spark when I ground it...it does not appear to be hot.
I never had the ignition on the whole time.

Do you know if there is a guide or something that tells you where eveything goes? Wiring problems scare me as far as fire and stuff...I want this done right.

Answers in red.

what is working?

fuel
fuel gauge works
choke
No electric choke on 74
temp
The temp works but use a black wire. Factory is green.
oil
If he has gauges, it should be mechanical. Idiot light should take a blue wire.
tach?
Have not been covered
AC
Possible, it is green wire.
alt exciter
Possible, should be brown.
lights
different harness which runs on the other side of the motor. If it reaching by the starter, then the guy a big problem. Although I suspect the PO may have swapped a harness manual application the wire to the switch is green/light green.

We never got to test it yet. We were just going by the color code.

I can't honestly say. Normally the stuff only goes one way, but for this harness, you have deal with the "eyelets" on the firewall junction block, alternator, and starter. That is where some people get into trouble.
Hopefully, that auto wire harness has some instructions on how to install it.
