another one learns the hard way....edit..stupid 700r4 tranny owner!!!

See all that ranting and whinning and it was driver error.

Thats the biggest problem with htese trannies. It's not the tranny itself... As long as you have it adjusted and cooled, you're good to go. We've had quite a few of these in vehicles and only one problem in the last 10 years or so. And the problem was a pump failure.

[/ QUOTE ]Neither do I. They are not needed unless someone had to run an auto for competition or something and needed the lowest possible first gear. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Then again in that case I would just rebuild a th400 and put a different ratio in for 1st. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I'll give a ditto on the: /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Good tranny shops are making weaker 200-4r trannies live behind 500+ hp big blocks BOP's yet the larger, stronger brother tranny(the 700r4) "sucks". /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Watson is a good example of a 700r4 staying alive. Too many people try and adjust them theirselves and dont know how to properly set them up or keep them cool.. Thats why they suck.

Th350's and 400's are dummy proof because they are so simple. It takes an operater/mechanic with a brain cell to keep a th700 happy.

Way and I mean WAY too many people have made th700's live behind monster big blocks and viscious small blocks without problems for them to officially "suck". The funny thing is that when someone claims they are junk, it is because it blew up with 180,000 miles, the TV cable was screwed up, or the best response " I need to use both an air and water cooler and 4th is for only highway use?"

[/ QUOTE ] No but I've heard about them popping out fo gear constantly and not to mention having clutches go out.

yep good ole 4th gear pop out..in the 83 the first time it happpend to me, I shut the truck off, was pissed of and looked uper the truck exspecting a dead axel or driveshaft /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

ahhh.700r4 is a great transmission if you get the right builder /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gifand you have the correct cooling system /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif its all about that tv cable /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gifhas to be just right.I have to admit my fresh 700 has been built to the hilt and im not worreid about a damn thing. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gifnot even with 1 ton gear /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I am betting on getting another 50,000 or more on my 700r4 . Love it . I wheel it . Drive it to work . Shifts great when I'm on it . Don't know who built it , but I like it

I'm GM to the core, but for the most part, I've tried to avoid having a 700R4 in my vehicles, mainly because of their reputation in the early years and knowing people who had trouble, although I didn't bother to know the source of their 700 problem. I had a 700 in my 87 burb and it was a good tranny. My only complaint was that overdrive "hunted" when climbing hills, and that was my fault. I put 33 inch tires on, and didn't bother to change the ring and pinions. From what I've observed, you need to get the thing built by someone who really knows the 700--get all of the later model upgrades, run an auxillary cooler in addition to your radiator cooler, and above all make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. I sold a friend of mine a 700 out of a 90 k5 wreck I had for his 84, not knowing if it was any good. He installed it, adjusted the TV cable to the proper pressure, installed an auxillary cooler, and has had zero problems. :usaflag: :truck:

I have some friend's with an '88 Suburban who spent nearly $1900 having a tranny shop rebuild their 700R4. It almost doubled their investment into the rig... but it's their daily driver.

I also know two people who have 700R4's behind big blocks... one of those big blocks has to be putting out over 400 hp easy, and it's holding up. They have "built" 700R4's though.

I have one automatic, and its a TH400 in the plow truck. I don't think I'd run a 700R4... but I just plainly like manuals. Overdrive has it's advantages... which is why I just got an NV4500. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But 465's do have their problems, too. I've had a few pop out of gear, jam in gear, and wasted a few clutches/throwout bearings due to worn linkage parts.

But I like the fact that SM465's are easily gotten for like $100, and clutches arent much over $150.

I'd have to agree about the SM465--they're hard to beat, even with their problems. And I plainly like manuals too. I learned to drive with a manual, and have driven one most of my driving life. I've had more trucks and K5's with the 465 than anything else. I just bought an 84 K3500 with a TH400 that's messed up, and was going to convert to a 465 since I have a spare setup, but I have been talked out of it by some friends for several reasons. I don't think I'd put a TH700 behind the 454, but if I had plenty of cash, I wouldn't mind installing a 4L80E. /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif
