I have a good friend who is an international broker for.European collector cars. He is big into the Ferrari BMW and Mercedes world. Anyway when I asked.him.about buying a BMW he told me that every 60 k it has to have a full tune up including timing belt as they stretch. If you can find one that hasn't been changed you can.really.use it to dicker down the price. Change the belt and it runs like new.

Except the ones that are timing chain.
Don't know much about the 1.8, or i'd comment further. But I know my M60 is timing chains.
Up to '95 these got the M42, 1.8 litre DOHC which runs a timing chain. Mine is a '96 which got the M44, same but slightly bigger at 1.9 litres, and still a timing chain. At least a timing belt isn't gonna be on my list of crap to do...

Can't give us the its to cold speech.
But I know you work late.
Haven't done much of anything. I did get shocks and a new fuel cap for it, but looks like the RTAB bushings are dealer or nothing around here.
Was gonna go on Wednesday because it's my shortest day, but I broke down for 2 1/2 hours instead and ended up finishing fairly late.
Bit of a funny story...first I got stuck. The first 'stuck' I haven't been able to get out of on my own. Then while trying to rock the truck back and forth the front brake airline blew. I guess it's been getting rubbed by the front tire when turned to full lock. Had to wait for the mechanic, who then also helped me get unstuck. If the airline hadn't of blown I would have had to buck up for a tow truck...Nothing like driving a spare truck...mine is currently waiting for some hydraulic valve (warranty repair)
I did get a propane heater for the garage.
Got a tail light out, which now has me scratching my head. I replaced the bulb and still no love. Front marker/signal on the same side is out too...wondering if it's related or not at the moment.

Cold is relative. standing in the garage ain't bad...but lay down on the concrete and tell me how you feel! It's really hanging on to the cold in there.

I had a thought... get some styrofoam say 1 inch sheet to lay on under the car... super warm and nice and clean, you'll love it!
I saw the link in the pm...but I didn't want to wait, deal with shipping, customs BS etc etc. That reminds me I need to see if BMW's parts department is open on Saturday. If not I may need to suck it up and get em online.

I was gonna use some big leftover moving box...but if that isn't good enough the styrofoam sounds like a great idea!
When my concrete slab in the garage feels like a slab of ice,I use a sheet of that foam insulation board that has foil facing on the sides as a thermal barrier,it works well and wont fall apart easily like styrofoam will.....................................................................................................My fiend works on a lot of BMW's and he replaces the control arm bushings on many of them ,the rubber is soft and deteriorates rapidly on our crappy roads here...he's had to weld patches on the rear swap bar mounting surfaces and spring supports and where the rubber biscuits sit between the rear crossmember and body too,the metal cracks around the rubber and gets punched thru instead of rotting like most cars do there....
Got em at the stealership this morning. $100 for the pair...

Back when I had a 300ZX, even my floorjack wouldn't fit under the damn thing, never mind the stands.
There are certain advantages to having big tires and lift on a vehicle, like being able to roll under it on a scooter without having to jack it up

Luckily my floor jack is fairly low profile. It's definitely weird working on something so low to the ground and tiny. I'm trying hard to think when I last owned a car. I'm pretty sure it 1989 and I had a 1968 Dart GT. Since that car all I've owned have been pick-ups and Blazers.
Even the short drive home in the Bimmer was a bit weird...I felt like I was sitting on the pavement and driving a go cart. It doesn't help I spend 12 hours a day driving a Peterbilt garbage truck.

riding around in a roller skate (I see it in the Vette) takes on a whole new perception.
I know what you mean Rene... even after driving the General during silage time the Duramax seems little.
