is there a trick to get it apart when pulling the engine? When I lift up on the engine, the whole front end lifts up (I guess the weigh is coming off the springs making them expand) and then the engine lifts up, but it won't come apart from the tranny. I don't want to lift it to high, so I don't break anything. Any advice?

Pull then engine forward then up.

Did you take the torque converter bolts out?

Where are they? I took 4 little bolts that hold a thin metal cover on, is that it? Or did someone (me) forget about those? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

did you get all 6 bellhousing bolts along with the torque converter bolts?

there are 3 bolts nuts bolted to the flexplate, you have to spin the motor to get to them.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

make sure you have all 6 bolts out of the belhousing, and the 3 bolts from the torque convertor, also make sure you have a jack under the tranny oil pan to hold it up. other than that it should come out, unless its stuck on the dowels, shake it a bit and it should come off. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

first off are you sure your trans mounts are off?

pull the dust cover off the bell housing to expose the fly wheel. 3 bolts hold it to the touque converter, remove them ( you will need to crank the moter to get them all, use a jonson bar and sockit on the crank pully to do this pull the plugs to make it easyer)

and all the bell houseing bolts.

remembering you have the body off the truck make sure the moter is balannced on the lifter mabey thats giveing you the greaf /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I have the bellhousing bolts off, in another post I said there was only 3, so I took them off.
I went out and looked to see if I could udnerstand what you guys are saying, I see there are 3 bolts holding the Torque converter to a big round thing with teeth (flywheel?) if I take out those 3, should I be good?

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

I dont mean to sound stupid. But how do I crank the engine over? I might beable to reach the 3 bolts with a wrench how is now. but I mind as well try to crank it over. How do I do it, what do I use and where do I put it to crank it over? sorry /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Those 3 bolts must be removed. YOu can turn your crankshaft off the front of the engine. Put a ratchet on one of the bolts on the main engine pulley and turn it till you can get a wrench on the 1st bolt on the torque converter. Then turn it till you can get #2 and then the same for #3.

Then the engine should slip out. You might have to shack it a little like mentioned above.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Okay. I don't have enough time to finish what I somewhat started today. Another example for myself to ask everything BEFORE I start. I can't believe its 5:00 right now. I have to make supper so...
I will turn the engine over from the front on bolts from one of the pulleys, then will get those 3 torque converter bolts I saw. Then I will support the tranny from under the oil pan so it doesn't fall forward (like someone suggested) then I will take the engine out and figure out how to block it up (or maybe bring the furd over to bring it in the shop... but yeah, I have to do everything tomorrow now because I don't have any time to take it out and support the engine before it gets dark. Thanks for all the help with my questions. I feel like a idiot for forgetting about the torque converter bolts.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

when you do get the motor loose, TAKE YOUR TIME, wires gan get in the way, get them loose. Be carefull, don't get you hand pinched, or your helpers hand, if you have one. Your chain may well have to be re-adjusted, this is normal procedure unless you have a tilt-leveler.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

it is easier to turn the motor over will all the spark plugs removed

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

if your doing this on a hoist just use a prybar or a big screwdriver to turn the flywheel. but if your on the ground it might be to awkward and be easier to turn the motor at the flywheel. everything was pretty much covered above. just take your time and dont forget how everything goes back together. mark things if you have to. the first time i took out amotor i marked everything, the bosses made fun of me for it but when i put the new motor in i knew were everthing went and it runs fine till this day. good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Okay thanks MJ, I will take out the spark plugs before I try to turn it over.
What things would be helpful to mark?

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

think he means make what stuff gose togeather if you cant remember how it gose.'

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

ooh okay. I pretty much remember where all the bolts go recently. But some of the other stuff I can't. I need to find bags to label them.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

i usually mark the electircal stuff. sometimes the bolts if theres a ton of em and there all diffrent. on the older motors its not bad but knowadays theres more electrical conections in a car then in a house. and if one is unplugged then oh boy.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

zipp lock freazer bag with the little write onlabes are good for id'ing bolts

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

it is a lot harder to remember where the bolts and wires go a few months later
if a guy was smart he would take a lot of pictures and also use a notebook to write everything down
like "3/8" bolt 4" long goes in 3rd hole in intake"
