any trick for getting ... HELP more questions at botttom HELP!!!

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

I've taken over 100 pictures, so hopefully that will help. I am definitly in trouble about some of the wiring, and maybe some bolts. When I was taking the wiring apart, I was so frustrating so I cut a few things that didn't co-operate...

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Once you get the torque convertor bolts out,pry between the convertor and the flexplate GENTLY about 1/2 inch back towards the tranny. Also, watch out that the convertor does not slip off the input shaft and kiss the floor, or use part of your body as a landing pad.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

okay, will it fall off easily? Or should I just watch it just in case? Thanks!

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

If you point the front of the tranny down ,even a little bit that torque convertor will slide right out.I always pull them out as soon as I can to avoid any accidents.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Almost forgot, torque convertor will be full of tranny fluid, so have a tub or lots of rags to set it on.

[/ QUOTE ]One of the best things that I do, is to take freezer bags ( the ones with the lable that you can write on), and lable what part the bolt belongs to, before forgetting. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

okay so I should take it out. Okay.

I will get freezer bags and start labelling the stuff today.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

IDing bolts is super smart! I am restoringa 1972 Ducati that probably only has a few hundred and I wish I had /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif
I always just used s cold chistel to move the fly wheel along from under the truck. I also figured out how to jam either a screw driver or a wrench in the speed holes so it wouldn't move while I tightened dat sumbich up. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Go stevo! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

how do I take the torque converter out? I got 1 out of the 3 bolts. I just spun the flywheel around and accessed the bolts. the engine made a weird sound though, I think it is the pistons moving?
so when I take the torque converter out, is it on the shaft? or is it just bolted up?do I take it out before I fiddle with the engine? thanks

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

I got 2 out of the 3 bolts out. The last bolt won't budge. I may try a longer wrench, or maybe a cheater bar. I just don't want to wreck anything. TTT for my other questions too. I need to do this ASAP!!

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

you have to seperate the engine and tranny
then the torque convertor will slide forward off of the transmission input shaft
you have the body off so it will be kinda easy, nothing is really easy when working alone.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

aaaaaaah I'm about ready to quit and do it another weekend. I can't get ONE last bolt off the torque convert/flywheel. I can't fit a cheater bar in because it's to long and doesn't have enough angle to work. Then I tried my longest 15mm wrench, and it still won't move. My shoulders/arms hurt from trying to get it apart when holding 1 wrench on the nut, and 1 wrench on the bolt head. any ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

buy a Ford. they use studs on the convertor and you only need 1 wrench to get them off, RIGHT TIMMY?

when all else fails cut it off /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

go have a break for a bit and come back to it with a clear mind

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

My Chevys, all but one, used bolts that thread into the front of the TC.

Only one wrench required and no fighting to get tc lined up (as if getting the rest if it lined up is easy).

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

Well on this one there is a bolt head on the flywheel, and a nut on the torque converter /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
what do you mean lining the torque converter up?
I got the last bolt off, I had to get in a awkward position with a trouble light wrapped around me, and a hole in my jacket, but I got it. What a stubborn little bolt!!

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

is the big metal thing with teeth on an automatic a flywheel or flexpplate? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

automatics take flexplates, manuals use flywheels. flexplates are commonly called flywheels though.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

okay. how strong is the flexplate? Can I put a piece of wood under it to prevent the engine from tipping?

ITS OUT !!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Put the wood under the oil pan instead.

Re: any trick for getting the tranny apart from the engine...

I don't want to squish the oil pan, would it squish it? Maybe I'll find some foam for it too... /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif
