anyone here done a 4BT..

Why? In my experience, wheeling a diesel is kind of a PITA. Before I put a gear reduction box in my Blazer one of the best things about it's setup (Carb'd 350/383, 465 and 205) was that I could use the brake to draw the RPM's down when I needed to slow down, even dropping to 400-500 RPM. IMO that's one advantage to a stick that is overlooked, auto's can't do that.

Guess you never tried to stop an auto with the tcc stuck on, acts just like a stick when you try to stop without pushing in the clutch pedal.
Ive actually wired in a toggle to bypass my trans controller, mostly for engine breaking. When i get my doubler in i suspect that i wont use it anymore cauz ill be way out of my stall range

I do agree about tryn to stop a diesel without the clutch pedal pushed in. When i worked ford dealer the diesels would drive right over the the brakes no matter how hard you push on the brake pedal.

I've heard that is really hard on the trans/torque converter but I don't know that for a fact.

I dont know either. But the 7.3 fords lock their converters as soon as 2nd gear, cant imagine that the torque of my sbc at idle could be any more load than a powersmoke under acceleration. An added benefit to having the converter locked is more cooler feed not that i do it for that reason.

Again, I'm going off of memory, but I think I've seen broken parts as a result of manually locking up 700R4's in 1st or 2nd.

No clue if Ford transmissions can do that but I sure wouldn't assume that a GM trans that didn't have that option could. AFAIK there isn't a '98 and older GM trans that has a lock up in 1st or 2nd gear.

or for racing.......

I've never had my own, but I;ve got some friends that do. This is a friends in Edmonton, this one is in a dakota, he sled pulls and drag races it. studded, orings, twins, it does pretty good.

good thoughts guys...keep em coming...

Your probobly right about a 700r4 or 4l60 they have lots of weak parts. They have a common problem of breaking the reaction sun gear with normal use. I would bet it would happen for sure in 2nd under a descent load. That sun gear drives 2nd 4th and reverse through the geartrain. I cant imagine any reason to be locked up in reverse but im sure if you were you would break that sun gear pretty easy. Hence the reason i threw my 700 in the core pile and built an 80 and havent broke it yet, granted it hasnt seen the abuse of some of the more hardcore rigs.

To get back on subject, there was an article in fourwheeler about a 4bt scrambler. Looked like it was done up really nice. Dont have alot of experiance with a amc model 20 diff, but i chuckled a bit when i read the details about the rest of the drivetrain.

Hydraulic circuitry will not allow lock-up in reverse or manual low in the 700R4, this oil is not available for lockup control till the trans shifts to second gear.

Didnt even think about that. Learn something new everyday.
