1/2 ton status
We need to sit down and figure out the tow ratings on these things. I keep vacilating between like 4500lbs and 6000lbs.
I know a year or so ago when I moved south I pulled a trailer that weighed at most a ton total and had the interior loaded with myself, my two dogs, and the back jammed to capacity. The truck was working and a few times it wasn't fun on the road. I can't imagine, even with a weight control hitch, towing anything close to 6000lbs.
Good hitch and towing setup, anything under 3000lbs and I'd do it all day.
it's actually less than 5K with a weight distributing hitch (i've been reading wrong)......so says the factory here when you do the math. the hitch they use is overrated for the truck.

i'm pretty sure the GVWR is 6100 lbs.....don't leave you much when it maxes out at a combined limit of 11,000 and you include the tongue weight onto the truck. imo...5,000lbs is heavy for a K-5 to tow safely.
here's one from '89: http://coloradok5.com/brochures/1989/blazer2.jpg
