Back In the Saddle Again

Countershaft endplay is at .005 with the OG shim, wanted to get it a little tighter but was unable to achieve that with the shims I have on hand. Spec says .002-.006 I’d like to be on the tighter end of that but I guess these are basically the original gears so there shouldn’t be much movement. IMG_2030.jpeg

One thing that sucks about out here is that you can’t get anything nearby I used to be able to pop in a trans shop or a junkyard and get everything I needed and cheap. Not anymore.

Ok, so had to tear the main shaft down again because after looking at the pic above I realized I put the reverse hub on backwards. Was up til about 1am getting this out of the case and pressing that off. Then putting it back together since 7 am and just got done :D the manual did not show the direction of the reverse hub well but I was looking at my pics before tear down and realized it was reversed. Won’t be making that mistake again. It’s in and I actually got the bearing to seat better on the main shaft could shim it a little more and still got .003 end play. Pic of sketchy press shenanigans. Came out to finish the job put the top on and shifted through all gears smoothly. Went to put 5th gear on and…..IMG_2100.jpegIMG_2101.jpeg

Pretty sure at this point I got a junk unfinished shaft. There is no way you can press 5th gear on without a threaded hole in the end of the main shaft.

Tempted to just send it home with a BFH

I ended up using the old 5th gear nut and the old 5th gear to press on the new one using the 5th gear nut threads. Very carefully. After I got it pressed on I then used 1/2 a bottle of redloctite and sent it home with the impact and then used my body weight to make sure it was between 250-350 ft lbs. I would hate to be the guy who has to take this off in the future and I really hope it ain’t me lol IMG_2103.jpeg

Ended up making the tool.

I think I have the tool you needed.
It's a half a moon with a square tooth at the tip.

This is the tool I needed. I have the other one too but during pressing on the 5th gear I was using it and the teeth just wore away on it. So I had this socket and lengthened it to clear the shaft and it worked perfect.

Well it ended up being me. Torque king sent me the 5th gear for the later model without telling me after I told them I’m building a 6.34 ratio trans. So I busted this all off, will need a new 5th gear nut. Will have to reuse the original 5th gear as the 19T version I have is no longer available. This info would have been great to have before I wasted my weekend. I explicitly told them what I needed but again I should have counted the teeth before putting it on. Now we wait for more parts. Finish it next weekend I hope lol
