Back In the Saddle Again

On my way to work this morning and had to brake hard at a stupid light.

Engine started running like absolute crap. Barely idling. Thinking I knocked something loose in the tank because it runs like garbage now. Rough idling and hard cranking.

Luckily I limped it to work because I was only a couple blocks away. Stay tuned lol

Check the float level does it smell rich ?
Actually smelled lean.

Pulled the plugs they don’t look bad but I have no idea how many miles are on them.

Cylinder 8 plug boot was loose.

Adjusted timing idle and air fuel.

It fires up and still pulls like an ape but idles really rough now.

Checked for vacuum everything looks good. I’m wondering if the rotor or cap is burnt. Going to go pick up a cap rotor and plugs and see how she fairs.

Did run better after plugging in the loose boot. But not as well as it did. At throttle it runs great.

Alright so I’m thinking timing gear is needed. Think it’s loose and skipped a tooth. Gave it a full tune up and now it barley cranks. Cranks harder and harder.

Going to attempt to shim the starter just to see if it will crank better. But I’m thinking it needs timing gears done.

yes I was going to go there, some times a violent stop will let a loose worn chain slip a tooth. Did you need to advance the timing? Vac advance doesn't effect idle.

I tried advancing and retarding the diz to get it to crank and nothing gets it’s to crank now. I had to advance the timing earlier while at work to get it to start. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s what happened. Since the mileage on this motor is unknown it very well could be loose timing chain. I have been romping on it pretty good. Just sucks because now I have to drive my wife’s jelly bean car to work.

you could bicycle nothing in this town it to far for a bicycle :haha:

you do for an oil change ?

I got it to start about three times after work, I drove it home and I’m thinking it skipped another tooth. Since it won’t even crank now. Tried shimming the starter to no avail. Glad tomorrow is Friday. Because I’m pulling this out and getting to the bottom of this.

So the plan, is to pull the motor.

ORD cross member with new motor mounts.

Clean up the firewall paint it and clean up the wiring more.

New water pump, new belts, clean up the pulleys. New heater hoses. While I’m in there I might as well jump for a new condenser and knock out the AC lines.

Will check this engine over on the stand. Get it cleaned up. Pull the intake, valve covers and oil pan. Dress it up better and get it into some paint. Throw a cam and some lifters in it along with a new timing set. Provided there isn’t some serious damage done.

If serious damage is done then all of the above and I will get this G20 010 block down to the machine shop and prepped for a 383 stroker build.

Forged crank, pistons, aluminum heads and roller rockers. Probably a mild cam. Since the truck will be down for a long period if that’s the case. I will do the drivetrain swap and shackle flip while the motor is out. At least the weather is right—right now for this kind of dilemma.

That’s as solid of a might as well move as I’ve ever seen.

Totally get the logic behind it. Get it done now.

Just like last time. I’m going to pull this engine and get it right then the transmission will detonate. It’s Murphy law.

I would start with a 1987+ block if you are going through that much work.

I thought that engine was a runner. Put a chain in it and spend those $ on the 383. Not sure about k5 but I can pull the pan on mine in the truck then the timing cover, use a 1 piece pan gasket.
New water pump if you think it needed
