Back In the Saddle Again

@Wes Harden and I were up late tearing this engine apart. Everything looks correct as far as timing goes. I was surprised we found a double roller timing chain and gear set under the cover. Cranking the engine after resetting the timing and it farted a bit but did not run.

It cranks easier now. But still not running.

The first thing we did was take the motor to TDC before tearing into anything.

We removed the cap and the distributor rotor was pointing at #4.

So with the uncovering of the double roller and nice tight chain we know it did not skip a tooth.

So now I am leaning towards a busted distributor or cam shaft. Will tear into it more today. First I will try a known good distributor and see what happens.

Did it strip the teeth on the distributor drive gear possibly?
They looks good. The pin looked good as well but I’m going to pull it right now and re check the pin. I’m wondering if the pin is busted in half but was lined up when we looked at it.

I’m thinking the cam shaft has to be twisted but isn’t broke yet
That would be a miracle, in my opinion.
I have seen cams shatter when dropped on a hard surface or hit by connecting rods.
I don't have any explanation for what has happened though.
I would check the distributor extremely well, top and bottom, if you haven't already given it a complete exam.

Did the gear on the crank spin on the crank? I've not messed with a small block forever just diesels and I know it can happen to them.

I don’t get it. I rotated the engine by hand and it all lines up. I’m going to pick up another distributor and see what happens. But we put the motor at TDC and that rotor was pointed at #4. Maybe the cam is snapped but it catches on itself during rotation because we are definitely getting front fire. I think we should test the spark on the rear cylinders before pulling the cam and also test another distributor.

I’m looking real close at this distributor roll pin and I think it is cracked. Going to knock it out.

Pulled the roll pin and it’s good. Everything is saying this engine should run and is in time.

We’re back up and running thanks to @Wes Harden for helping me out.

Motor has a double roller timing chain and is also a 4bolt main.

We ended up chasing the symptoms around on this truck. At the end of the day we believe something happened with the carb and fuel. Either fouled almost all the plugs at the same exact time or floats stuck or something but the distributor being off is still a mystery.

We chased that rabbit all the way. Pulled all the accessories and eventually pulled the oil pan.

Put all new plugs and new distributor in and we are back on the road. 3A61D330-CDB8-4FCD-B795-6603BD421ED9.jpeg
