Back In the Saddle Again

Ok so after getting that “wow” quote from torque king I’ve been doing a lot of research on these parts. What I have found is that all these suppliers are using the same exact kits.

I have now sourced everything I need to complete the rebuild with a new square top for under $700.

Same exact shafts, gears, bearings and synchros as the torque king kit. Just doesn’t have TQ in the part numbers.

So that’s what I’m going to do.
 
They are great to deal with but definitely not the cheapest. I like them for axle tools.
I agree they are mighty helpful. I think that’s really what you’re paying for with them. They have great customer service. Can’t even argue that a little bit. I bought their NV4500 rebuild manual a while ago.
 
After full tear down of the countershaft. There are some sharpened/chipped gear edges. Also, I found a small piece of metal behind the front countershaft bearing. Inspecting the bearing surfaces there’s some marring discoloration but nothing I can feel with a nail or pick. I am thinking of filing the sharp edges down by hand and running this countershaft at the moment as there is nothing standing out to me that would say it’s for sure no good.

Can you put it in some V blocks to measure runout to make sure it's not bent?

Also, make sure those chipped edges don't contact the other gear or it can cause premature failure. Some gears are through hardened and some are case hardened and once the hardened surface starts to chip off it can cause issues. I am not sure which one those are made out of, just a heads up.

I should have measured endplay before tearing it down in hindsight. So I had something to compare. Factory spec is .002-.003 for both shafts. You’re probably right. It would appear the sliver I found is from the keyway on the countershaft. Might be best to replace it after all. I was inspecting the gear and the early version the front gears are replaceable on the shaft. It looks like to me the key way is actually busted inside the gear very hard to tell but doesn’t look aligned on the keyway. Yeah I can Chuck this is a lathe and measure. But I think it’s wasted.
 
Alright have run into a little snag on the countershaft. I can get a replacement shaft and 4th gear (one that is all chipped) However, they no longer produce the 3rd gear I need. My concern is that 3rd gear rotated against the keyway causing that little metal sliver I found behind the forward countershaft bearing. I really want to maintain the 6.34 gearing. Basically I either run this shaft or change the entire trans to 5.61. Both of those scenarios suck.
 
If I can save this 3rd gear, if the key way is damaged and the gear isn’t I can reuse it. The teeth on it are nice. Just can’t get the thing apart to inspect the key way area. My dad’s press didn’t have the rocks to pull the gear off the shaft. Gunna need a big honcho press looks like. If the gear ain’t damaged I can get a new 4th and new countershaft

I know it doesn’t help your actual situation, but I prefer the taller first in my 4500 over first in my 465. Actually drives like a five speed, where with the super low first, you always end up taking off in second.

Yeah, I loved the sm465 in my other truck. That low crawl ratio is awesome and I’m used to taking off in 2nd
 
Ok, update on the trans debacle.

By the grace of god I found a good used 32T C/S gear which will allow me to maintain the 6.34 ratio.
the keyway is not not messed up the key itself is a little tore up. So the shaft and 4th gear are great.

New used 32T 3rd gear and Ill have everything I need to throw this together. The guy at midwest trans said he couldnt believe they had one on the shelf said they are basically non-existent. I lucked out.
