BAD A$$ E Bay K5

Too bad it's a diesel...

Yeah, ATS turbo'd diesel conservatively putting down over 450 lbs of torque to the ground...will run at absolutely any angle...and will pull down double the fuel mileage of a small block. I can see why you'd want to skip all that.
For crawling it's a damn hard combo to beat. There isn't a gas engine out there that will equal the torque at idle. With the ATS turbo there are very few small blocks putting down it's peak numbers either...Add the doubler and 5.13's and that rig would be a wet dream to crawl with.

Dave, apparently to correctly time a diesel you need some fancy timing probe. I've never seen it done, but do know that tool is spendy...it can be pretty closely ballparked, and if it smokes a llittle it prolly just needs the timing bumped up a hair.

I understand you like deisels but 550 ft lbs is not "rare" on a sb. Just depends on who you roll with. I know this thing has you excited but saying there isn't a gas engine out there that will equal the at idle torque is a hell of a statement. By the way who has ever dyno a diesel or any motor for that matter at idle. You have to spin deisels up to make torque they don't pull like a bulldozer off idle... whatever it doesn't matter.

I didn't see the turbo either.

Diesels make a tremendous amount of off idle torque. Some of the small 5.9 cummins we rebuild at work dyno at 500 ft torque @ 2300 rpm. That is a lot compared to a gas engine.

Show me a well mannered, smooth idling sbc that puts down 550 lbs of tq to the rear wheels and has all the tq down low...I'd honestly love to see it.

A diesel's idle is also governed by the IP...try and pull it down below it's normal idle speed and the IP will add fuel. They're very difficult to stall, I'd venture near impossible to stall in low range. I could stall my 355 at will even in low range...and having driven and wheeled both there is no comparison to the off idle torque the 6.2 has. It's not even close...

Sorry to see your selling that rig. That is an awesome rig. On the Diesel note, I use my Diesel 2.0l Mercury Topaz to haul stuff around the yard and nearby. It is really slow and probably has 60 hp but the torque in first and second can haul a broke down K5 to the garage. Also you can release the clutch and it will climb hills with no padel. Only downfall I see on Diesels is if it dont have a turbo or any other upgrades they lack in power but not torque.

Uh.... turbo that sb then we can talk. I meant 550 at the flywheel... that equal out to ABOUT 450 rear wheel tq.

2300 rpm is not idle... a turboed bb or even sb could hit those numbers without being ill mannered. My sbc will be putting down 450 ft lbs at the flywheel or more... gimme a turbo and then we'll call it fair. Remember turbo vz N/A equals not fair. I know diesels are turds without em but pound for pound turbo for turbo its hard to beat a good running sb.

OK, you crawl with a turbo'd small block or whatever you like...I'll stick to my lowly 6.2 without turbo. :D

If we're drag racing I'll bring something else, but for crawling I love the diesel. That's just my preference after wheeling both a fair amount...in all honesty I was never a diesel fan until well after i swapped the 6.2 into my truck. Figuring out my fuel mileage the first tankful was pretty cool (16 mpg on 40's...vs 8-9 with the 350) What sold me was the first wheeling trip...it was a complete pleasure to crawl with. I do run a manual tranny, and the great majority of things I wheel at idle with both feet flat on the floor. Point and shoot...

It does OK in the mud, but wouldn't be my first choice if my truck was a mud truck. Dunes? Again the 6.2 wouldn't be my first choice (either would the manual tranny though). DD and weekend trails, rock crawling etc etc...the 6.2 shines turbo or not.

The truck for sale is built to crawl, and although it may not seem like it the 6.2 is actually an excellent choice for that. For a diesel it's not especially heavy, and it often gets confused with the Olds based 5.7 so most people think it's a POS. That makes it plentiful and cheap (good for budget builds)
With the ATS turbo it'd probably be pretty fun to drive...and not something very much the same as what everyone else builds.

Anyways, I think we've probably hi-jacked this thread enough by now. My point was only that the 6.2 is actually a great choice for crawling...not the only choice.

Okay, okay... enough hijacking... obviously its about personal preference and what you want to do with your rig... we could go on forever.

damn i hate to see this rig go
i loved everything about it.
82dieselburb do you got an e-mail or are you on pirate? i got lots of questions to ask ya about some of the stuff on that rig
