Bull****.

I don't care how crooked you are, you can't book 200 hours in a week.

And even if you could, you couldn't do it for long. You'd have to be ripping every car for 5-10 extra hours of work, plus parts, and if you weren't doing the work, the shop would be shut down pronto by mobs of angry customers.

If you said somewhere around 100, that'd be a better estimate.

I've turned 75-80 hours in a 60 hour work week on a regular basis, and everybody got what the paid for, and nothing more than what they needed.

where I was at, we had one one mechanic who was the managers favorite. He was a yes man. He would do anthing the manager asked. In turn, the manager would take care of him. He would add labor to the bill or give him credit for the tire installers labor. He consistently booked over 200 hours the whole time I was there. At another shop I was at, we had a ASE master mechanic who really knew his sh*t. He specialised in engine diagnostic and failed emissions type stuff. He could diagnose and fix any problem and do it in record time. He was one of the few honest guys I knew. He consistently booked over 300 hours a week. That is not a typo. I said over 300 hours a week. He was so good, service managers from the other locations would call him for advise on their problem vehicles. If he had to actually go to the other location, he was very well compensated.

oops wrong thread

Edit: Why do you want to be a mechanic anyway? It's kind of a dead end job

How long ago. I used to work there. It was just to far to drive for the money tho. To me atleast. Also I hated not knowing which store I was at everyday.

This was around 2003. I wasn't at DeRe for long. I was mainly at the store across the street next to the gas station.

Yeah, it has to be a dead end job since cars will stop being produced in a year or so and we will not have anything to work on:doah: .

A good mechanic will make a pretty damn good living. So how it is a dead end job is beyond me:rolleyes:

A damn good living is 45k? Once your a mechanic your a mechanic no big promotions or anything. Won't be a manager unless you go to school. Unless your working at a mom and pop place.

And maybe 10-20 years down the road electric cars could be reintrouduced and become popular. They require virtually no maintenence.

starting pay...

you can make over 100k

Obviously you know nothing about the profession. You DO NOT have to go to school to be a manager #1 and #2 since when are mechanics not capable of having an education. Have you ever heard of a degree in automotive technologies? Besides that I know several mechanics making 75,000 a year and a couple that make more.

How many mechanics do you know that make over 100k  vs the amount you know that make under 50k

Most large companys want you to have a managing degree now-a-days

and with a good technical background you can go a long way in the automotive industry
