In the time I've spent trying to figure this out I could have gone ahead and swapped out to the roller cam and been done. I haven't looked for pushrods from a gen iv yet, but that may be the ticket. The whole issue is that I can't find rods the same length as the ones I have, which seem to be doing the job of fully opening the valves. And that photo will keep me from putting mine back in, since that's exactly what I was worried about, one of the balls had a sliver of metal underneath that looked like it might be getting ready to break off. What a frankenstein of an engine, although it seems I'm not the only one.
Gen V and VI share the same balancer, correct? I'm still trying to figure out why my timing marks are so far off....like 45* off. When they say bare block would that come without a crank in it? Maybe I have a different crank and that's the reason the gen vi balancer isn't lining up.
