Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
Do that, and then sell your current tub, instead of crushing it.

Martin

Nothing worth selling on the current tub unless someone has trashed their tub crawling and needs another tub to trash. Windshield frame and roof are rusted out, firewall is rusting out. Doors have been thrown out. B pillar is rotting. Rockers have holes. Body mounts have been patched together. Tried to pull the access panel to the trans tunnel and the metal just peeled apart.

You got a whole new ride!

Decisions decisions...

I'd still want the 4L80E, but if you have the driveshafts and all the parts to run the 700R4 in the meantime then you could get it going and worry about the upgrade later. But if you need to replace the driveshafts or t case then at that point I would upgrade the trans too.

You can just shut off the trans control in the ECU and keep that trans harness in case you upgrade if you decide to do that.

I was expecting to see the new engine in the rig, this is an interesting twist.

I've been thinking long and hard lately about the direction of this project. I had originally bought the truck as something to restore and rebuild with my kids. Had some fun crawling with it and upgrading it. But the body on it is crap and not worth saving and with no doors and top it's not really fun to drive but a month or two out of the year and that's not what I wanted out of this thing. I want to drive it and enjoy it.

It'll be a while before I get the new truck but your thinking like I'm thinking in that if I can make the current 700r4 in it work for the time being, I can get it back up and on the road while I work on building up the 4l80e. Worst case is it doesn't work and I'm rebuilding it sooner than later but at least I'll have a truck that's worth restoring and breathing new life in to.

It's definitely an interesting twist but I'm back to being excited about working on it.

When i started on my k5 I headed to the stripped out bare bones crawler build, it wasn't so great when it started being my dd again... no regrets tho.

With my suburban an interior and some comforts have been nice, it really shines when you only wheel it 5% of the time but just want to drive it the rest.

Keep your 4l80 and when the time comes it will be a quick swap over and back on the road.

After thinking about it more, decided I’m gonna go ahead and just swap the springs and axles into the new truck instead of trying to swap the bodies around. Won’t be as easy to work on the frame with a body on it but it’ll be easier to get the truck on//off the trailer with axles under it. Once I get the new truck into the shop I can build a frame to support the body and allow me to wheel the frame in and out from under it.

looks like a lot of fun was had. Grats

they showed up around 8:45-9:00; we got started about 9:30 and they were pulling out around 2. Honestly I think it went pretty good considering we had to pull the rear leafs and install both axles with springs and tires on them.

I thought it went really well all things considered. I’ll get that last bolt figured out this week.
