Blazer picking practice-Pics of possible blazer

That is a rare beast with a 4 speed in an EFI rig. You can tell by the single headlight that it is a lower trim level. A Silverado trim with EFI and a 4 speed is very rare. That being said, I would be very interested in that one. Being newer than 1985 it will have the more desirable hydraulic clutch set up. Being newer than a 1987 it will have TBI fuel injection. Being a 1989 it will have the NP241 which is more desirable than the NP208 it replaced. It should also be a mechanical speedometer yet in 1989 I believe. I am not sure of the break on mechanical to electronic. I know some 1989's have the mechanical speedometer.

Ask the guy for some more pictures. Specifically of the engine compartment, interior, under body, and so on.

I called the guy, he was going to take some more detailed pictures and email them to me.

Yeah so I'd say maybe $2000 as it sits is what I'd pay for it.

I think I found one In town I'm interested in, it appears to be mechanically solid, it started on the cold start test and ran good. It has a few rusted places and needs a paint job, I'm offering 1000 for it he wants 1800 but he's Been trying to sell it for 3 months. I'm taking it into local mechanic to see how solid it actually is mechanically. So this one is all yours haha.

I don't want it, I was just trying to help you out. With your level of mechanical knowledge, I would stick to 1987-1991 models only.

Martin

Oh ok, so I should offer that guy 2 grand? And what is the reason I should stick from 87-91? Just curious. 500 miles is quite a distance for that car.

1987 - 1991 use EFI instead of a carburetor. It is just better. Especially if you have limited mechanical knowledge. I have pretty vast mechanical knowledge, and I prefer them myself.

Also do you want an automatic, or a manual. The TH700R4/4L60 automatic is prone to failure. Especially the early years. By 1987 they made a number of improvements, and they are a much better version of the same transmission. The SM465 4 speed is a MUCH stronger transmission. Some people don't care for the wide gear splits.

As for 500 miles, that is nothing. I flew from Nebraska to California and drove my 1990 home.

That is what I was talking about, don't get too antsy, and wait for a good deal that falls in your lap, local is always better because it doesn't cost you more to go get it.
Plus you can go look at it, and if it's no good you didn;t waste too much time and money.
And it doesn't matter what kind or what year you get, get something that you like, and that is worth what you pay for it.
If it's a good runnner it's good if not but cheap that's good too, you have a daily driver so your not stuck if the vehicle needs work, and as long as your intention is to learn how to work on them, you'll be fine.
My sister, bought cars, then had trouble, they bought the Haynes manual and fixed their own cars, if a Girl did it, so can you, as long as you have the will.
ANd don't think EFI or CARB, it's all easy, just find the right truck, whatever that turns out to be.

I've even been considering trucks, like a k10 or k20. How do they compare to blazers? And would a k10 or k20 be better for off roading? I feel like a clean truck would be easier to find than a blazer because they usually stay on the street(im probably wrong about that) but I'm just trying to keep my options open.

What do you want? That is the main question. I have one of everything. I prefer the Blazers as a toy, because the seat leans back and gives you more room, and you can haul more buddies and or chicks around. The top coming off in the summer is also a hug bonus. I prefer riding in the back seat and having some one else drive in my Blazers half the time.

Rust? Needs paint? I'd pass.

A good paint job will probably run you $1k. Dealing with rust is a PITA and potentially could cost more. The real issue is that rust will continue to eat away at your truck. So if you're okay with having to scrap it in a few years, or accept the fact that it will be worth less when you try to sell it, then okay. Even if you go put a new this-or-that (engine? tranny? Sets?) in your truck, it still won't be worth much more than you paid for it to a savvy buyer. It sucks to put $5k into a crappy truck and only be able to sell it for $3k. If you start with a great truck you can probably get your initial investment back plus some...

After my experience with a few of these, I would say your #1 priority should be to avoid rust. It's a huge pain to deal with.

Don't try to polish a turd...

Ya James I'm passing on it he showed me the engine and there was duct tape and rags shoved into places... And I read through the ryokens guide to rust treatment and that sounds like such a hassle. I'm still on the fence between blazer and truck though
And ya it would be a straight up toy I already have a DD. it just feels like the trucks are more readily available.

That one you would buy in California ships anywhere what would you pay for that?! Let me check those out later I'm at work and really shouldn't be on the forum..
