Blazer values keep skyrocketing...

They are all over the place in price: I'd look at the 1976 and the 1978 first. From a first glance those seem reasonable...but yeah the point is made...the prices are all over the place and you can still find Blazers in reasonable price ranges. Just not for $1200 anymore.

It's just what happened to the 60's muscle cars. People that have grown older and have money long for the car they wanted and couldn't have, or the car they sold and regretted. Nostalgia drives prices up. Now it's the turn for the classic SUVs of yore. Blazers, Broncos, Wagoneers, Land Cruisers, etc. Cars for Clunkers probably took more than a few off the road, and a lot of the others have succumbed to rust and disrepair. Even though they're not as collectible as the full convertible models, the later square bodies are starting to see some movement in price as more and more SUVs become car-based crossovers and these dinosaurs were among the last of the rugged, live axle truck-based SUVs. It makes me feel grateful that I scored mine in running condition with minimal rust a decade ago for $1500 bucks because the paint was flaking, it was old, thirsty, and the guy's wife wanted it gone. :woot:

Also could be that my age group.. late gen x, those born in mid to late 70’s grew up learning to drive on these vehicles.. I know I did. Have to nostalgia to that era and want a little piece of it to have or fix up and drive..

Who knows really? The Blazer, especially the roundeyes, my personal favorite are just mean lookin vehicles. Totally boss maaaaaaaann

I wonder what the asking price relationship to the week during a Barrett or Mecum auction is...

I wish I had a k5 at times, but my 'burbs are way more practical for my needs....

I have been eye balling 2 door 'hoes lately. SAS would be fun!

So here's the rub. A really nice one goes through BAT for $85,000 and the seller of this K5 thinks by that logic his is worth $32,000.

'70 K5

His details from the ad:
70 blazer with four wheel camper, from factory. It’s all there ready to be personalized. Mostly original, never abused, no rust. Incredible barn find from Colorado. You gotta see to appreciate. Call Scott show contact info
A really nice 70 just sold on BAT for over $85,000 check it out red and white one no top. they just keep going up. They have passed up chevells and el Caminos.

There is no basis of the idea that a freshly restored '70 went through an auction site then his HAS to be worth $32k. It's a crock. It looks solid no doubt, but it's not reaching restored values.

In the last year I have been asked twice to put a price on mine. {I would not do it.}While I am pretty sure it is worth more than the actual cash I have in it I really cannot see selling it unless some one offers me stupid money for it.

Yeah, mine isn't going anywhere. Regardless of the price. I still go by the old saying "it's worth what somebody is willing to pay". Some of the crazy prices at auctions is the product of one jackass trying to one-up another one in a bidding war. Great for the seller, but it inflates the going rate for the rest of them due to the same logic in the ad I posted.

To go along with the it's worth what somebody is willing to pay, check this link out.

'78 K5 Camper

We all know this one. I haven't connected the dots as Mike didn't tell me what it sold it for. But my super Google-fu skills tracked it down to a Jeep dealer in all places Nashville, TN. Price is only $2,500 less than what he had dropped his price too. I think it was a realistic price then, the dealer price is in the ballpark, but as I told him when he was setting the price a Blazer Camper is a very specific niche vehicle. To somebody that wants one, they will pay what they are willing to pay, to somebody that just wants the Blazer the camper is something to be removed and not value-added.

It's not the first one I've seen go for high 4 figures either. Last year a Yellow '82 K5 Camper surfaced on Craigslist that was a legit barn find. But it ended up cleaned up and polished at a Mecum auction in Vegas.

'82 Mecum ad
It went for $9000. I think it was under $3000 at least. Tidy little profit for the seller for sure. By the pics, they merely did a deep clean. I know this it looked like a hantavirus hotel for mice in the Craigslist ad, they must have done a hell of a job to get the stink out of it. The buyer checked in on my camper thread over on Wander the West forum.

The point is, if somebody is willing to pay the price, it's worth it. But basing the price on another auction isn't realistic.

That dude never said that his price is based on auction results, but I see where you're coming from. The ad is written by some dude trying to make profit. I clicked on the ad and I think it'll go 30k no problem.

How much would you sell yours for? If i may ask
I really don't know. I look at how much it would take to replace it with an identical model. Except for Zoo's there is probably not another one like it that I know of. Even then mine being a round eye Cheyenne with air and a few other features his does not have makes even that comparison off a bit. A crazy offer that I might consider? 30K? Even then, I don't need the money and would have to think about it.

Huh? Ok he didn't say his price was directly from auction results but when he makes the comparison he's doing the same thing.

If it was appraised by someone that knows the market that's one thing. But it's just another person seeing results on the TV or internet thinking they can cash in on the market.

As far as this one fetching $30k I still think he's on crack. I've been watching the market on the four wheel pop up Blazer campers very closely for three years and I can say without a doubt he's going to be sitting on it at that price. Hell the supposed "last" fwc Blazer camper that was on a very original '87 that was mint in nearly every way wanted more and I saw it come back up for sale later with a lower price. They wanted insane money like 40-50 grand. It is the nicest example of the setup I've ever seen. If it didn't fetch the money the '70 I linked to is not going to get it.

The market for these campers is riding the coattails of the Chalet and expecting similar money. Note the add for the '70 said it was a factory installed camper. That is a BS statement. No fwc camper was installed at GM. There was no deal in place like Chinook had with the Chalet. But it is commonly misunderstood that any camper on a Blazer is a Chalet and therefore installed at the factory. Mine gets called a Chalet on a regular basis. The Chalet market alone is crazy to track. They trade hands often and usually by someone looking to flip and cash in on the fact that they are rare and gaining popularity on the collector market. Check @azblazer and his chalet thread if you want to see that market madness.

The camper market is a very unique little niche within the larger Blazer market. Making direct comparison to the regular Blazer market isn't accurate.

well I have no doubt that reasonably good shape 1st gen would go for 10 plus maybe 15k these days. I mean just within the last 12 months we saw a 1gen post here go for 13k and none of us thought they would get more than 5k. Can't find the thread. Was older Dad's and Dad said it 15k and kids said no way. They asked here and we agreed with kids. Well they got 13kish for right away.

Look very rough to me, and had a bunch of old guy mods and repairs

It was worth what that person was willing to pay for it. You saw the flaws and knew what it would take to repair it. So to most of us it was a 5k truck. But to someone that wanted one like the one they remember from childhood they might be willing to pay the price for it. Nostalgia is a key factor. It makes people willing to spend more than it may be worth. Gen x was the generation as kids through the entire run of full size blazers and squarebodies. Average age is in the forties, prime time for buying back part of thier youth. Some will be willing to pay through the nose for them. Muscle cars saw the same nostalgia bump when boomers hit middle age in the 80's.

Yes... Gen X is/are probably this biggest market for these squarebodies. The ones with the $ and little desire to fix will them up will be your target for the already restored ones, the 15-20k+ Vehicles . Those like me, a little or a lot less well off, get a cheap one and slowly chip away and fix it myself. Generally speaking, there will be exceptions.

For a laugh...$8k hahahaha 72 huh? Hah

The ultra rare 1st gen square body. :eek1:

Good way to look at it. I'm the same way. there is no need to take a loss on a machine that becomes rarer and more valuable everyday.

Whoa! Here in San Diego a clean first gen starts at 20k. Any time you going to wealthy coastal areas, you see first gen's with nothing but money dumped into them, similar to Travis Barker from Blink-182 blazer
