Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I just bought an M1008 two months ago and haven't had any issues with it until the other day when I believe 3rd gear in the tranny went out. I need to replace it asap and I'm not sure of the exact specs and what tranny I need. I know it's a turbo 400 that's it. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!

Check your vacuum to the trans first before you call it quits, Loss of third gear will usually mean a weak reverse as well. The 4x4 400 does not interchange with the two wheel drive version, you will need to find a replacement with the same output shaft length as yours or have yours rebuilt if need be.

I'm pretty sure it's toast cause it makes a grinding noise and the rear wheels lock up. I could smell the tranny fluid as well.

Yeah it locked up on me and I pulled over and shit it off and checked if it was leaking from anywhere. I got back in turned it on drove fine until I hit third gear made the grinding noise and locked up.

Two bands in a 400, one is low reverse, only applied in reverse or manual low, the second is the intermediate brake band, only comes on in manual second and helps slow the direct clutch drum down.

Ah. I had a jeep lose od and it was a band. Then noise then catastrophic failer.

So It would need to be rebuilt then right?

Ok will do thanks for the info everyone...really appreciate it. What is a standard price to have a tranny rebuilt or a fair price?

Depends on the shop and the parts used, warranty etc. Anything from $800-$1200 on the bench with converter and upgrades would be expected

That's definitely out of my budget at the moment but thanks for the info. I'm gonna have to go used.
