well if you can do the gear install yourself, go ahead.. but i thought most shops cost 500bucks to install each axle..
hunterguy86 said:While it is cheaper right now to regear the 10 bolt I tend to think more long term. You have to spend the money twice. Thats 2 gear sets and install kits. Granted right now its more money to swap but in the long run it will be cheaper to regear a 14 bolt. The 8 lug front conversion is cheap and really easy to do and rims can be found for 40-50 dollars.
Your idea to find a 14 bolt semi floater is not a bad one, if you can find one. Here they are rare. And, its still a semi floater. For me its better peace of mind to have a full floater.
After breaking my 10 bolt with 35's and light throttle I dont like em. And breakin a semi floater sucks because the tire falls off. No bueno.

Avery4jc said:so I think I'll go with 4.88's for now, then if I like them I'll put them in my big axles down the road, if not then I'll go lower. This way I don't have to worry about the contact patch.

. I don't think thats possible.
Avery, sorry for clogging your post.. was TRYING to help another member but guess not.. Im just some backyard wannabe mechanic is all.

Avery4jc said:No, I meant if I like how 4.88's feel then when I get my bigger axles I'll get some 4.88's for them. If I want to go deeper then when I get the bigger axles I'll go 5.13's or lower.

NateInChandler said:Well, the 5 pinion planets are the most expensive parts at almost $200 my cost, the beast sun shell runs about $50, and the input sprag assembly runs about $80 or so. so thats $230 just in hard parts plus $60-70 for a kit and band. the normal going rate for a bench rebuild in a tranny shop is any where from $450-800 depending what it is.. at our shop, a 700 with us buying all the parts i just listed would be about $900 with a 12 month warrenty..Nate

I wasn't trying to be an ass if that's what you thought, i just want to know if you would like a membership, if so i am going to pay for your membership. I already sent a PM way earlier today to Steve to find out how i can pay for a membership for someone on here. Let me know if you're willing to accept it. I really appreciate your input and i fully understand that not all questions can be answered without seeing or hearing the item in question.![]()

Natefireplug said:I've got to believe you can find a 14bff with better gearing for the cost of the 10b gears, install, and 'whatnot'. As for rims even that can be done REALLY cheap, used steel for instance. Will you be wheeling while in school? If not run two sizes of tires so you only need to run two new rims, and for flats use tire goop. Like already mentioned I think it would be a shame to waste money on the 10bolt. Maybe there is a member here that has what you need and will trade for something you have? Heck if you were near me I'd give you mine on consignment! I'd bet you can find someone nearby to do the same? Good luck.
