well if you can do the gear install yourself, go ahead.. but i thought most shops cost 500bucks to install each axle..

I've had numerous offers from local guys to help me out, so yeah, I'll be installing them "myself".

One is from one of the mechanics where my dad works (motorcycle shop) who used to be a diesel mechanic and said he has everything at his house to install them and he'd help me out. Or one of his customers who bought a bike and has become pretty good friends with my dad said his son just did the gears in his truck and he had the stuff to do it. Either way, I'll work that out later.

I'm getting a quote on a set of gears and a mini install kit from a guy I know who works at 4 wheel parts and gets items for something rediculous like 5% over invoice so if there's a big markup in gears I'll get them through him, if it's not a lot then I'll support the vendor on Pirate and get them through him.

Ok, the guy on Pirate just got back to me and he said that he'd sell it for $350. I didn't say anything yet because he wanted $400 for everything so it seems like I'd be able to get the tranny for less than that, shoot at that price I might as well get both of them. He also graciously offered to meet me in Auburn, the catch is I looked it up and Auburn is two (yeah 2) miles from Grass Valley where he lives while I'd have to drive 235 miles from Fresno. So I PM'd him for some more info. and if it seems worth while then I'll first off ask for less since knocking $50 off and him keeping the tc is a joke and next I'll ask for him to meet me a little farther or knock a lot off the tranny.

I'm going to see if I can find more info. on what this tranny really is, if it's a "2nd generation" or what. Anybody know?

Here is the thread that has the description...

While it is cheaper right now to regear the 10 bolt I tend to think more long term. You have to spend the money twice. Thats 2 gear sets and install kits. Granted right now its more money to swap but in the long run it will be cheaper to regear a 14 bolt. The 8 lug front conversion is cheap and really easy to do and rims can be found for 40-50 dollars.

Your idea to find a 14 bolt semi floater is not a bad one, if you can find one. Here they are rare. And, its still a semi floater. For me its better peace of mind to have a full floater.

After breaking my 10 bolt with 35's and light throttle I dont like em. And breakin a semi floater sucks because the tire falls off. No bueno.

Yeah that would be no bueno but I can get gears and install them in time for school, I doubt I could find an operational 14sf with decent gears and swap it in the truck in the amount of time I have, and I know I can't do the 14ff and front hub change and new rims in time.

I know it hurts you guys to think somebody would spend money on a 10b but it is the only option I have unless somebody close to Fresno has a 14sf with some gears.

Oh, and what do you all think about that tranny? If I can get it for $250-$300 I'll go for it. Then spend some $$ on some upgrades and have it put in. That and the gears would make me a happy little camper for my Senior year.

so I think I'll go with 4.88's for now, then if I like them I'll put them in my big axles down the road, if not then I'll go lower. This way I don't have to worry about the contact patch.
-Avery

Do you mean to say that you are going to put the 4.88's gears from your 10b and transfer them to your 14B later on:confused:. I don't think thats possible.

4x4, you wanted my help and i tried to help you, its really hard to diagnose something without being there or seeing it in person.. sorry i couldnt help. Avery, sorry for clogging your post.. was TRYING to help another member but guess not.. No, I meant if I like how 4.88's feel then when I get my bigger axles I'll get some 4.88's for them. If I want to go deeper then when I get the bigger axles I'll go 5.13's or lower.

No problem, I don't think anyone is accusing you of anything so settle down there partner. ;)
Being that this is your field of expertise what do you think it would cost for a tranny shop to install the parts you have in your first gen 700r4? Oh, and about what would it all cost parts wise minus the .500 boost valve and corvette servo since I'm probably getting those from a member on here. Thanks, rough estimates are always helpful in planning.

Well, the 5 pinion planets are the most expensive parts at almost $200 my cost, the beast sun shell runs about $50, and the input sprag assembly runs about $80 or so. so thats $230 just in hard parts plus $60-70 for a kit and band. the normal going rate for a bench rebuild in a tranny shop is any where from $450-800 depending what it is.. at our shop, a 700 with us buying all the parts i just listed would be about $900 with a 12 month warrenty..Nate

I'm not sure how to interpret your response. I wasn't trying to be an ass if that's what you thought, i just want to know if you would like a membership, if so i am going to pay for your membership. I already sent a PM way earlier today to Steve to find out how i can pay for a membership for someone on here. Let me know if you're willing to accept it. I really appreciate your input and i fully understand that not all questions can be answered without seeing or hearing the item in question. :thumb:

Hmm, the local shops I've called have quoted me all in the $1,000 range for everything, they said if they open it up and it's basically all toast then for parts and labor it would be about a grand. I should probably go talk to some of them in person. I never feel like I get my point across over the phone, plus I just like to talk to people in person.

I've got to believe you can find a 14bff with better gearing for the cost of the 10b gears, install, and 'whatnot'. As for rims even that can be done REALLY cheap, used steel for instance. Will you be wheeling while in school? If not run two sizes of tires so you only need to run two new rims, and for flats use tire goop. Like already mentioned I think it would be a shame to waste money on the 10bolt. Maybe there is a member here that has what you need and will trade for something you have? Heck if you were near me I'd give you mine on consignment! I'd bet you can find someone nearby to do the same? Good luck.

Nate, in the next day or so i'll have your membership taken care of. I PM'ed Canmore to see if he can help me.

Ok, my dad has tomorrow and tuesday off of work so maybe I can sucker him into taking me to the junk yard to find a 14ff with some gears.
I'll look for a K20 so it'll bolt right into the spring plates too.

I'm talking with Virgilh about getting a K5 that would make a nice dd so maybe I could do the swap and sell my wheels and tires to help offset the cost. Man, you guys are so helpful with suggestions all the time that it makes it hard for me to make up my mind.
