Builders burn-out! w/pics

i just had my S&W 10 point cage welded up today. it was mostly notched and the 8 point fit good, but the halo and a pillar bars sucked. if i were to do it over i would order the 8 point, make the a pillar hoop and use spreader bars to tie it in to the rest of the cage.
Thanks for the info I will have to talk with my brother about it, he's gonna be the one welding in my cage. Got any pics of ur cage?

sure, i will have it put in next week, right now it is in the barn waiting for the paint to dry so the pics are of it out of the truck.

i have more so if you want a special pic let me know

OMG dude, I can't believe you cut the whole roof out of your rig! I think it's sweet! Is that a D60 under the front now?

I hope to have mine driveable by August for a trip to Gilbert MN a few of us have planned. I am seriously debating cutting the top off mine too, I have been thinking about it for a month or so. Everyone tells me to leave it but I think it would make installing the cage easier and I might be able to get it out of the garage without taking the tires to .5 psi. It would be easy to make a bikini top off the rollcage for a sun/rain screen.

As for the cage, I only have two pieces notched and I have to do the rest. Hope to work on the cage over the holiday weekend. I found a cheap set of buckets out of an escort and got some of the $50 5 way harnesses off pirate.

we cut the roof off so we could tack the cage together, then lift it out to burn it in solid. I'm thinking about welding the windshield frame back on like a 1975 k5. however it is a trail only rig and not even close to street drivable, so i have been toying with the idea of making a roof out of aluminum and finish cutting the a and b pillars off. i have been looking for opinions from ck5ers, but they have not said much.

as for the 60..... yup! it has Yukon shafts with 35 spline stubs, bobby long joints, s&n drive flanges, 5.13's and a spool. when the cage is finished up i will mount up my orbital valve and ram. then it should be shake down time!

I know how you were feelin man, my Blazer sat for over 6 months after I got it up to VA because I got power hungry and decided to upgrade the whole top end sitting in my apartment parking lot instead of pulling the motor and doing it on a stand in my buddy's garage. Now it finally runs and I am takin it to the shop tomorrow to get an exhaust put on it and then I will bring it back and try to finish it up. Its hard to keep motivated when every day something else goes wrong.

Looks like you got a nice rig goin there man, these things take time and lots of work. One problem after another but soon you will be done.

Got the 4 link mostly completed last night. I just have to finish welding in the crossmember and 2 axle brackets then it will be DONE! My only issue now is the rear shock hoop is too short so I will have to mount the shocks to a part of the tube bed. Waiting on the bender stand to be shipped and I can start in on the body.

I am planning on cutting the roof and B pillars out this weekend and starting the cage. I think I am going to keep the windshield though. I am only cutting off the roof because the cool kids are doing it:wink1:

Now that the rear suspension is done I feel relieved. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The geometry seems to be good, good separation at both ends, nearly flat upper arms slightly longer than the lowers with about a 3 degree downward slope to the rear end.

It seems lot of people talk **** about the 4 link calculator on other sites. I know experience and real world testing is most likely the best way to engineer a suspension but the calc really helps a DIY'er get a solid starting point on where to position the links, how A/S is effected by the angle of the links ETC..kind of a crash course in beginner suspensions.

lol...cool kids.... taking the roof off makes final welding much easier and gives you the option to lift it out and paint it so you don't have to mask everything off.

Well it is officially a convertable now! Cut the roof and "B" pillars off but left the windshield. I need to clean it up a bit but I like it! I did not get any pictures yet but I will tomorrow. Last weekend I finished making the control arms and assembled the rear suspension.

Last night I assembled the tube bender so I didn't work on the truck at all. I really wish I would have built my own cage instead of buying the Jegs. I am not too happy with how it fits and that there were only two notches out of a dozen pieces of steel.

The plans for this weekend are to get the 4 link completely welded in. The rear suspension is all mocked up and 90% welded right now so it is almost done. Get the tube bender bolted to the floor and try to finish the cage. Monday I am ordering enough tube to do the bed and front end The steel should be delivered on Wednesday.

How about you, is your cage in?

so where is the pics? i want to see your topless truck. how sick dose it look all caged up and linked?

Right now mine looks sick in the sense that you would want to throw up after looking at it.

The cage is not done yet and the roof cuts look horrible. I ordered 60 feet of tube that will be here Friday so I can do the tube bed and front fenders. My August 14th deadline is getting close!

what kind of tube and what are you paying? i just put another 40' of 1 3/4" .120 wall in to my a....... i payed $71 for the tube

i think that 1 3/4 " is about 1.50 a foot here IIRC

and by "another" I ment aanother one bites the dust..
