Building a 500hp 454

Man this is running off the rails quick. Heads and cam to stroked big block. The self learning efi like you have will work with the bigger cubes as long as you keep the cam mild. Which is what you should do anyway with your intended use. Get a 496 kit and some AFR heads and you got an instant monster.

Does it have the EFI too?

Interesting thought, can you put a stroker crank in an L29?

It's got the L29 intake complete. But the standard BBC intakes fit so you could run what you got. As far as the stroker crank if you got one for a gen VI.

I have nice headers now and I'm assuming an L29 would need different headers?

How foolish is it to think that I could swap a stroker crank into a used L29 without doing anything else? I assume I would need different pistons or at least connecting rods?

Maybe what I'm asking is, what's the bare minimum amount of work I could expect to do for something like this?

That's a loaded question.

Resize rods and new pistons then balanced

Even old style BBC headers fit on 8.1's too. I have a header designed for a mid-80's 454 on my 8.1 in my crew cab.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but most of what I would have said has already been said before. For your situation Scott, an 8.1 doesn't make any sense as you already have a 454 in your truck. 8.1's are a great option for those looking for nice/reliable power out of a pretty much stock BBC (as the 8.1 in stock form was rated the highest just in terms of hp/tq numbers from the factory compared to any other BBC from the factory), but 8.1's are expensive as crap to build. So I've always said if you are fine with just stock style BBC power, do an 8.1 and a tune on the computer and you'll be very happy. If you want to build a BBC for 500+ hp and somewhere around 600+ tq, then go 454 all the way as the aftermarket is huge on them and you can build more power for so much cheaper. If my crew cab came with a 454, I would have just pulled it and rebuilt it into something you're discussing here and been done. But mine had a clapped out TBI350, so I knew I was going to do a motor swap and I think the 8.1 swap is pretty cool and fit the bill for the use of the truck great.

As far as going with an l29 block, if you can find a good deal on one, that would be a great option as they're a great block to start a build with. It also will allow you to keep using your truck as is while you build the motor. Once you're ready, pull your current motor, swap over all the items you plan to keep (intake, exhaust, EFI system, ect), slap it in and do burnouts!!

Man this is running off the rails quick.

The "Might As Well" bug hits people hard sometimes, haha. I will say though, if I was in Scott's shoes and wanted to build a badass BBC, I would consider a stroker kit with a set of aluminum heads and a good cam too.

Yeah wtf @Kay86K5 your supposed to be a big block guy and helping me ward off all the lscumminswapers and now we got a big block thread and your mia:dunno:

To add to your point. Another block allows you to build over time and just swap. A running big block will net you 800-1000 bucks so you would get that back when your done.. might be worth it to buy another one.

:haha:, my bad, been busy with other things, haha.

And I totally agree @beags86 that buying a second motor and doing the build, though it would add costs up front, you could recoup the costs in the back end, and also keep your truck usable the entire time (which I know is important to Scott, as it would be for me too). Just something to consider Scott

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but when you posted that post, what's the bare minimum amount of work I could expect to do for something like this... Makes me believe if you pulled the engine, that the cost of it might stall you a bit.

Look we get it and we all have been there. Big block stuff isn't cheap. If you use your current block you might cheap out and not get what you want, or you might have your truck down a long long time. You don't want either of those.

If we are going to run this off the rails, we might as well run it clean off the rails. :D

Gm Performance ZZ572 big block. Only $16,000

Needs injection though

It does need injection to drive to Moab and get tilty on Moab rim

I remember before there was fuel injection and wheeling with carbed trucks. They did have a lot of problems with running out of fuel and shutting down when on any incline.

@mrk5 used profanity on Moab rim a few years back. Hot dog tanks on pickups bring the suck too when your nose down
