Building the Ultimate GM vehicle

I like the crewcab idea. How bout a crewcab, frame shortned to fit a standard short bed that is tapered. 8 inch lift, 39.5 boggers, internal/external tubing, 6.5LTD with stacks, th400, doubler, 60, 14ff, cheap beadlocks, and some kick ass driving. I would buy that video/magazine.

OK, boys-here's an oldtimers' ideal rig:
64 Corvair pickup body-the one with the fold down sides
2nd Gen 1 ton K frame
Mog axles
478 GMC V6
NV 5600
205/203 doubler
Holley Injection system

Whats a Corvair???:D

That would be different...

The only unknowns I have for a UA build up are front locker choice and auto trans or not. I like the auto but the 465 would be nice for durability. I want a selectable front locker, just not sure which one.

What I know I would want:
FI small block, the Ramjet 350 would be great,
doubler or similar if using an auto-
second case with L/H drop,
HP D60 w/ Dedenbear Cs & knuckels, 4340 shafts & CTMs, hi-steer + hydro assist,
FF14B, disced, Detroited, & shaved so its not so much of a boat anchor,
4.56:1 & 40" tiers, so it will do the highway streches w/o too many RPMs,
body would be a '78-91 K5 with suspension seats mounted to a cage, bedlined floor, premier power welder, soft top & soft doors, P/U tailgate, Warn 8274 front and Ramsey RE12000 in the bed, of course the usual skids/braces/sliders/trimming & my boat trailer tail light mod,
a 6" spring made to push the axle 2" fwd for the front and shackle flip with 2" lift 56" spring,
the free BFG tires sounds cool so I guess 17" rims w/ Statun internal locks would be the rim choice, but I would show up with 15/39.5-17LT Swampers in case the BFGs didn't cut it.

I honestly thought fred was building his "operation army truck" for the ultimate adventure, cleanly tucked away winch, banks turbo, mastercraft seat conversion, nice set of rock sliders, tool boxes!! thats a great start!! maybe chop and tube it like the ford superduty that poison spyder did "the one with the 52" michelins". I would say some 42"-44" tires if only bf goodrich would step it up with some taller krawlers, with one of the new wizbang three or four speed t-cases, like the stak three speed with overdrive "so you can lower the axle gears a bit more" and maybe a klune in front of that!!!!! but that would be alot of $$$$$$$$

Just throwing this out there because I like a little more room inside. how about a mid 90's 3/4 ton x-cab short bed with a 5 speed manual. Wouldn't really care if it was a 350 or 454. SAS D60 up front (passenger side drop with a 241 to match) and then lift, lock and outfit with whatever you want. I'd run 5.13's and 39.5 swampers.

Please feel free to poke lots of holes in this plan:D

Who ran the green K5 on UA a few years ago with the blower 6.0 in it???

The only thing I would add is a vote for a diesel engine, 6.2 or 6.5 diesel with turbo. good torque better economy than the gas engines. And to save money on your trip you could burn filtered used veggie oil from resturants.

I would also keep the wheel base shorter so you can get thru the trails better.

With all of that in mind what would you guys think would be a good vehicle for Ultimate Adventure.
You have a decent selection of vehicles to choose from and they all need tons of work to make into the reliable good looking vehicle that needs to appear sometime in the summer somewhere in the United states.

What would you build if you had the chance to do it??

I'd love to see you guys do one of these.....

I know, I know.....BTDT. But for most people on this site, THIS is the Ultimate expression of an "Ultimate K5". It's not some tubed-out freakshow, and it is immediately recognizable as a Blazer (Jimmy).

Personally, I was saddened by the loss of this vehicle.....for me it was an icon of what the Blazer community was all about. I'd love to see you guys do something like this again.....a TRUE dual-purpose rig, which is what most of us have (and what will be required for the UA 2006 anyway).

What about a crew cab that is kinda already started along the way but is just to long.
A little frame cutting and bed bob later and you got a party barge that could go well.
Ultimate Adventure has not had a long wheelbase in a few years.
That was one of the thoughts that I had.

I also think a good old K5 would be cool too.

I would also put a vote in for 6.2L or 6.5L. Although I can understand if you want to stick with what you know, which is probably not diesels. Which makes the gas motors attractive. Then I would say why not a TBI 454.

I also vote TH400.

My idea?

Hoefully Mine when we're done building it :D (+ a doubler & a few other gadgets & gizmos, of course.)

Shortbox wheelbase, comfortable seating for 5 + a dog, enough bed for tools & a spare tire & parts

I'd very much like to see this.

I would vote for a k5 with 52's up front, 63's in back w/flip. A set of quality shocks. Extend the wb to 115-120" for stability. 42" iroks with tastefull trimming. run some h2's with staun beadlocks. minor boatsiding with sliders. pre runner style tube bumpers. winch up front. Interior family cage. suspension seats with harnesses. bedline the interior. drivetrain would consist of tbi 454/nv4500/203/205/14bff/d60. d60 needs 35 splines and ctm's for reliability. 5.13's and detroits. crossover w/hydro assist. upgrade to 1410 yokes and throw some shafts that won't break in.

I forgot to add; since I already have the Ultimate GM, you could just borrow my truck. :haha:

I couldn't resist. :haha:

They should do a working mans GM truck .

Shackle flip rear
Pick your favorite off the shelf front springs front with thicker shackles and bigger bolts
Homemade bumpers and skids
Reliable stock motor
reliable REBUILT tranny if auto , sm465 is stick
Lunchbox lockers
35-37 inch tires ( the most costly single priced set of items )
pawn shop CB
single transfercase
OK for at least the rear CV .
Used axle swaps if gearing sucks on stockers

carry used parts and maybe do a sidebar on what to carry and how to do repairs faster on trail .

Thats what i want to see . I already get to see the stuff I can't own . Make it look like something the regular 30,000 dollar a year guys can eventually attain .

If you could pick & choose...

platform = 87 swb K10 (tbi for dependability)

Ideally a 4spd truck so you could benefit from the low crawl ratio if a Doubler was not in the budget.
I agree with this selection. The SWB trucks have the right overall weight of the vehicle with the right wheelbase which puts in right in the middle of the blazer and the LWB truck.
The blazer and LWB truck are going to weigh too much and with the lesser weight of the SWB, it allows more power to weight ratio.

BTW, if anyone is interested, I have an '87 V10 SWB with the 5.7, 465, 208 and 10 bolts front and rear which would be an excellent platform to build from. The engine runs real good and strong. Tranny shifts fine and crisp. Remove the 10 bolts and slap some 1 tons under it and maybe swap out the t-case for a fixed yoke version t-case of your choice.

Any interest in this truck from me? PM me for details. :deal:

I still say K-30 cut the rear short then you start with the HD stuff I think it would be cheaper in the long run Because then your not Buying the good axles and t-case you already have them
