Built a new work bench today...

Nice job on your bench!:waytogo:

We have a bench like that, we weld on it all the time.

Just grind off any splater after we are done.

My primary welding bench is a 1/2" thick top 48" wide by about 36" deep. Full 2x2" square tube frame and a drawer underneath. Got some jig turners on it and so forth. Rack for welding clamps. Reciever tube on the back side under the top in the center. I have a vise that I keep in that spot 99.9% of the time but it is removable.

Dumped it on its back side today. Just had too much weight hanging out there on it. I may be bolting it to the floor.

I'll bet that got some attention...:haha:

Yep, it did. I just got out of the way and let it go. The guys come over to make sure I didn't get clipped and to help me right it again. Just a short little blip in a day of welding.

Where do you find a piece of steel that big without paying an arm and a leg for it?

My table is .50 x 4' x 8' with casters and jacks. I got my steel plate for free out of a guys driveway from a house he just bought. He said if I could figure a way to get it I could have it. I used a couple seat clamps and a hand come along to winch it up in the truck where it stayed for a few years and man was that nice in the winter:D

Come on now Kert, WE bought you that plate for your bench. Geez, give us credit where credit is due. :D

True that!! And a big thank you goes out to the Full size Chevy building crowd especially the crew here at CK5!!!

What is the ideal bench size for everyone here? Providing you had the ample room to work on it and manuever it around. I'm trying to decide on a movable bench for the shop and think a 4x8 may be too big.

Bigger the better. This was as big a piece of material I could find that would fit within the space I had. We have a 4'x8' 1/2" bench at the shop and I wish we had 3 more.

Wes, while my workbench isn't movable I used a solid core 1 3/4" wood door as the top then covered that with a piece of .125" thick steel that I had a backsplash bent up and a front bent down on. Basically the top is 36" x 80" and I built it to stand 36" tall.

i did a similar thing as i used to work for a door company so i would grab a new solid door everytime mine got dirty. i put it at 40" tall tho.

I'm actually thinking of doing a much lower fab table... I hate standing at a bench working on stuff.. I constantly have a stool or 5 gal bucket pulled up to my small fab table in the dungeon... helps with bracing yourself for welding, etc it seems...

you can see in this pic my little fab table to the right of the fan.. tiny.. free frame and had this free iron skillet plate thing around.. it's like 1/2 x 18 x 26.... but i kinda like the low aspect...

i'm thinking my new one i'll make like 30" x 45 or 50 x 1/2" w/locking casters.. and i'm seriously thinking of making it about the height of the little one.. which is about 30"....

so my local steel supply has pieces of 1/2"x28x50 for 113$....good deal?

Yeah that's about on par with what I paid. Mine was a little more but it's about 10" longer. The 1/2" rocks, I was banging out wheel studs from the rotor on my dodge tonight and it was so nice having that bench. It didn't move at all and was so solid they popped right out.
