Burb chop down.

I must say, this is one of the most exciting Garage threads I have seen since I've been here. Keep it up man!

Hmmmmm interesting indeed...

While a part of me cringes a bigger part is really happy to see someone passionate about her. She was an awful good truck me! I'm glad she is being given the attention she deserves.

Yeah Jay, I didn't know what you were going to say about this whole ordeal... hahaha. But it gives me an excellent chance to get rid/fix some "would be" problem areas while I am at it.

WOW, most exciting thread, eh?? I'm really flattered, honestly. Thnaks guys.

I have made more progress on the "hoop", and body mounting points.

These four pictures are of the sheet steel strip being clamped to the inside of the outer skin.

I used that many clamps to try and keep the form of the "hump" running down the side of the truck even, and not all weird-like..

And here are four MORE pictures of the tack welds hold the strips on until the final weld.

The welds look all chalky because I HAD to switch back to flux core.

This hobby welder I bought is setup for the Argon/Co2 (?) tank, and has a couple straps on the back to keep it with the unit. But the welds didn't want to take, and I got fed up...

The thing is as SOON as I switched back the welds started to flatten out, and I am now happy again...

Oh yeah the pictures...

damn dude I had the same problem back a few years ago.PAY SOMEONE and save the headache

Its way more fun to do it yourself. :D And you can take pride in saying I did that.

Dude its looking good. If I may offer alittle suggestion. Since you have the rear fender wells out and you have new metal there, I would suggest widening them for more tire stuff and clearance. I know I would if I had it already tore apart.

Man this is no head ache...

I am having a ball out here. Once you get going, you can't quit.

And besides that, I would pay out the ying-yang to get someone to fix what I have just done to this truck.:eek1:

But to tell you the honest to goodness truth, the only previous expereince I have had before tackling this job was the passenger side rocker panel... Go figure! hahaha.

clarkjw24, I was thinking about doing that, and since you make such an excellent point, I will do it. There is only one clearance problem I can think of, and that is whether or not a widened inner fender will interfere with the rear seats...

actually wait, the seats are already located further then the inner fenders, so yeah I'll do it, hahaha.

Okay update time.

The first two pictures are of the shoulders. I wire wheeled them, and then to the metal, and in the second two pictures you can see the cut i made.

It turns out that burbans narrow about 1/2-3/4" at the back... So I had to make these cuts so i could SQUEEZE the remaining body in to match the corners i am keeping.

Look, go ahead, just go look, and see for yourself, hahaha.

some pics of it fitted up.

There are two things to note in that last photo.

Firstly is the scrap straps I used in conjuntion with the welding clamps. They really helped me out with keeping the "hoop" steady. Really, REALLY handy.

And second, but more importantly, is the fact that on a burb the roof slopes down... so there is like a 2-3" gap between the two roof panels... i am just gonna bridge them, and hope for the best....

Alright guys, so I started to fill in the gaps.

First picture is of the cardboard cut out I used as a template.

Second and third pictures are of the metal piece installed. Oh and you can see I had started to weld the hoop to the body aswell.

Man, your totally right.

Fitting the inner fenders in will be tough... lots-o-cuts, hahaha.

okay, so I removed some more steel from the side of the truck. You guys all know why, and what it's for, so i won't explain. (first picture)

I had to remove the lip from the new rear inners so i could mount that flange right up against the steel left on the body.(second and third photo).

You'll see that come into play hopefully a little later on today.....

Well I took the "mounting lip" off with the grinder. I didn't need it because I am welding it to the bed, instead of bolt it to the side of the bed. (first two pictures)

I then cut the inner fender in half. I was sure to leave a sizable flat section for both halves so I can weld in a filler plate between them. (third, and fourth pics)

And lastly I welded the one half to the bed. (last picture)

I know I didn't remove any of the bed, but I did that because at the time I didn't know where that section of the inner fender would be sitting. I am going to remove that section later on...
