C30 6.0, is NOW a burb swap, thread.

Well.... Probably already widely known,,,, but, I'm a dumbass :doah:

And I proved it again. lol.

I brought my head's, springs, and new tool to work tonight. Figured I'd do a razorblade rebuild on my head's during down time. Even brought the lapping compound and tool for that.

And forgot my new valve seals and locks at home :notworthy:
Damnit.
I have them all apart, scraped carefully, sitting in the parts washer. But can't really finish them now.
Oh well. Reassemblely will be easy at home.

Bah. Minor inconvenience. Keep moving forward!

One head done. Wish I could have figured a way to make it nicer looking. But really wasn't that worried.

Valves lapped, new springs installed.
The new springs supposedly weren't needed, but raise the effective redline by using them.

Got the other head done tonight.
Now all I have to do to have them DONE, is remove the 1 broken bolt in each one.

I removed the other broken exhaust bolts with a normal stud extractor.

Haven't heard anything from the engine shop yet. Guess that's a good thing.

Here's a normal 6.0 with the same cam I got.
Except he's not bored .065"......
Seems to pull pretty hard :woot:

Broken bolts are out of the heads finally.
Used a reverse bit and an easy out.
Still haven't heard from the engine shop. But there was another 6.0 sitting in from of mine and a dude dropping off a 429 at the same time. Plus whatever they already had going on. That's fine because I still need some more cash for pistons lol.

So until then I'm in a hold pattern. :notworthy:

Shop called to verify the bore size. I knew they'd question it lol. But they're starting on it at least :woot:.
Pistons ordered. Should be here beginning of next week.

I think I'm going to have to have them check the crank too though. The front main surface feels like it has a ripple to it. It's subtle but I can feel something and shouldn't. I really hope I don't have to have it turned because the bearings are on their way :doah:.
Guess I should have waited there :dunno:.

I've bought main & rod bearings individually in the past--from NAPA once, and the second time I ordered one myself when I still worked at a parts store..
Might not be the same today, some places wont "break up" a set, others like NAPA will if their warehouse has them in stock..

One truck I had ,needed one .010 undersized rod bearing, evidently it had been rebuilt before I got it and only one crank journal had to be turned down, the engine was run low on oil when the hose to the external oil filter blew off,but only that one bearing suffered any damage..it was the #1 main bearing on a 235 straight six in my '56 pickup..

I also bought a .001 under rear main bearing for a 250 six I had--went to replace the rear main seal and found the bearing had copper showing, but the crank was still fine..figured if I put only the seal in.any play in the bearing might make its life span short..

Brown santa strikes again!

:woot:

I for some reason thought they were coated skirt. But oh well.

Shop is final sizing the block to the pistons. It was right at about .0017" tighter than they'd like.
They're cleaning and checking the crank too. Possibly polish it.

Getting close :woot:

I did end up finding the other 3 head alignment bushings shoved up into the heads.

I'll have enough stuff around to get the short block together soon. But getting the pistons and paying the shop drawing Ned me far enough that I no longer have the money for head gaskets and such. :doah:
So it's going to have to wait a bit to go back together.

Should have taxes back by the first week of March or so. Then I'll have the rest of the cash to get everything I need to get it in the truck and ready to go.

"IF" they do that $1400 stimulus they keep talking about. And "IF" I qualify.
I think I'm going to pick up a holley terminator x setup.
I figure that'll give me the flexibility for future possibilities.

I'd also like to pickup a trailblazer SS intake and fuel rail/injectors too at some point. But that can wait a bit. That's the best intake for low to mid range torque in the cathedral port variety.

Block is back :D

Start assembly tomorrow.

And the plan has changed.

This is going in my 95 suburban instead of the dually. Dually is getting side lined for a while. I'll decide what I'm doing in it at a later date.

Don't want the diesel in the burb anymore, it's supposed to be my DD/cool truck anyway, and I figured the LS would be a better fit for that particular vehicle.

I'm going to probably stay big block in the dually. But want to go NV4500 at the same time, so it's just all out at once. I'd also like to see if I can find an l29 maybe as the engine to start with too.
I bought the burb to be my DD, but love my dually so was going to use it instead.
But I think I'm going to Build it as an occasional driver and mainly a tow rig.
Too many drawbacks to DD'n a crew dually.

First thought that comes to mind:

Second thought...wouldn't it be easier to start with a gasoline (Vortec) burb and swap engines in that? Then you'd skip the diesel-specific headaches.

:dunno:

Lol. It's actually been being contemplated since about 2 days after starting this thread. Then not being able to start my burb when I want to leave work sort of solidified it.
I'm actually going to start directing this thread over to the burb thread I guess.

Already had the diesel burb, and it's in better shape than many of it's era.
Bought it because it was diesel. But soon learned that I like the NA 6.2 about 40 times more than the 6.5TD. not impressed with the 'improved' version.
