red EOD submitted a new Build:

C3500HD tow rig

Stumbled across this truck on the local ads and couldn't pass it up. 1995 C3500HD with 6.5 diesel/NV4500. Pretty low miles at a little over 141k, had been used as a electricians truck. New batts and it fired up, mostly good on the test drive. ABS light on, constant clicking noise from the area of the HVAC box, HVAC fan only works on high, cracked windshield, 3rd syncro sucks (grinds), exhaust cut off behind the cab.

Just a few minor problems and in need of a service. Picked up the truck to become the primary tow rig turning the 82 crew cab into the offroad toy. So the service bed is likely coming off and a flatbed will replace it. Or maybe chop down the rear 4 boxes so the gooseneck can be attached. Goals for the bed are:
Gooseneck hitch
Gin poles
Enough storage for roadside tools, not much else

Has the 11ft ish bed length. 65mph cruising speed at 2600rpm. Might step up to 245/75/19.5 tires to get cruising speed up to 70mph.

Cool truck...subed...

Thanks, my target goal for a tow rig is able to reliably handle up to 26k combined weight which this truck is actually rated for more than that so good there haha. Much heavier duty chassis and brakes than the 1 ton. These had 2 gearing options from the factory and looks like this truck got the 5.13's. Front bumper, better turbo, then some engine reliability upgrades as needed (mostly cooling system stuff).

The bed is the biggest planned project for this truck. Borrowed these pictures from another ad, basic idea of what my bed plans are. I have a rusted out flatbed that's being used as a scrap metal bin, will take a closer look at it's sub frame and probably use it along with the turn over ball gooseneck hitch. Same idea as I was building for the crew cab before. Starting from the flatbed will be easier than chopping down the service bed.

Using the gin poles that are attached to the old k5 in this pic. Lengths are roughly 10ft collapsed to 18ft extended when they are assembled. Not sure what winch will get used yet.

being a 6.5 diesel someone has swapped that front bumper from a gas truck . last i recall diesel got 2 cooling holes in the bumper gas didnt . but being a c3500HD it might be different with the lower valance being bigger and taller rad over the 1500-3500 series trucks .

nice starting point for sure !

I think the 3500HD all got the same bumper whether the diesel or big block. The extra lower valance allowed for the needed extra air flow needed.

All The c3500 we had where I work All had that front bumper on them and they where all 6.5 diesels. None of them had the holes in the bumper but they all said 6.5 diesel on the hood which never saw that on many pickups.

Either way the stock bumper is goin bye bye, planning to go with a ranch hand or similar type of bumper. New windshield and exhaust are at the top of the list for next week along with the windshield wiper problem.

The lower balance between the grill and bumper of the 3500HD is due at in last in part to the body lift installed at the factory to provide more clearance according to the factory manuals I have.

Never noticed that they had a body lift on them. Our automatics where also had the same piece.

Nice find! We’ve got a 98 with an automatic and flatbed and it does very well loaded heavy. It’ll suit you very well

The filler piece is there to make up for the dropped bumper. The bumper can be only so high off the ground, so it's lowered and used that filler piece in place. The frames are totally different on these than a even a 1 ton, that makes the bumper sit normally higher. I had one that I wanted to build, some RPO codes have Dana 60 calipers on the rear. I think it's tow truck or roll back....Small site and tho haven't been on in years, but 3500HD.com had some good info....

The frame and brakes are the main reasons why I bought it actually haha. Had been debating buying a newer dedicated tow rig (2001-2007 range duramax/powerstroke) when these 2 HD's popped up. This service truck with the 6.5, and a dump truck with the 454 at about double the price. Tires for the 19.5" wheels are reasonably priced/available in the 225 size and there's no significant size change until stepping up to the 265's (about 32.5" vs 35") which is a large price jump so will eventually address the top speed concern with gearing changes.

New windshield is scheduled for tomorrow, then to get it registered and do the bed swap. Flatbed is a rusty pos but it's better for my needs and has a solid sub frame to rebuild from. Might strip it down to a 'skeletonized' bed with just the aux fuel tank, bed winch, generator, air compressor, hitch, a storage box, and gin poles on it. Gotta relocate my trailer/stuff by the end of december so the bed/hitch got moved up on the priority list once this is street legal again.

With the bumper, it's not the grill insert for the factory body lift that bugs me. It's the fact that I've hit 5 deer and a dog on the highway before, plus the idiots that pull out in front when "I didn't see your truck". Kinda looks like it has an underbite too with the way it sticks out and no grill guard haha.

New windshield a few days ago, registration and oil changes today (engine/trans/axle). Gonna spend part of tomorrow rotating the tires since it has 2 oddballs on the rear axle. The other 4 tires are the stock 225's then 1 of the rear hubs has 2 245's on it. Rotating the 245's to the front so the rear axle has 4 tires the same size.

Once those are rotated will grease up all the joints then get to the brake controller and prepping the rear electrical stuff for the bed swap that's planned for next week. Service bed is listed on the local classifieds for $250 but has to be gone by the end of next week.

Shaved some weight swapping to the rusted out flatbed. Down to just about 8000 lbs. Cargo was the service bed and a few hundred pounds of scrap.

Rusted out bad however it will cover the needs for now.
